Oh for sure. I’m glad private aerospace has had the opportunity to flourish (especially in the united states, where these larger projects are supported by things like NASA and the DoD). No, I'm talking about huge singe-piece vessels.
Specifically, a pre-steamer (all one piece) that's about 30 feet tall and 20 feet across that goes from room temperature during shutdowns in summer and as low as minus 40 celsius during winter shuts up to over 100 C during operation.

After 30 years and hundreds of shuts, no cracking or other damage (it's a pressure vessel and is x-rayed annually).

Also, at the same plant, the buckets on the front loaders in winter go through some severe thermal punishment, performing both snow removal duties and ash system removal (ashes and smoldering embers over 300 celsius) minutes apart.

If you're making a bridge, sure

If you have dozens of sheets bent and weld like that, it WILL crack just by existing. Doesn't need to be a big crack to cause anything to leak.

"re-usable" rockets is not that complicated. You just recover it and shoot it up again after refurbishment. Since most launches involve so much expensive cargo/lives, why try to save a few shekels to make it re-usable?

>> No.11971198

>Since most launches involve so much expensive cargo/lives, why try to save a few shekels to make it re-usable?
Because it contributes to a self starting trap. Not alot can be done in space flight because launches are expensive, launches are expensive because the typical payloads are expensive and infrequent, typical payloads are expensive and infrequent because launches are expensive, and on... reusable and cheaper rockets can break out of this trap and allow more to happen in space when properly supported.

the reason costs are "so high" is because the buyer will pay quite a bit, they are mostly governments and large corporations. So saving a couple million with a refurbished rocket makes little difference. You are talking about a market demand that doesn't exist as of yet.
