It's just part of what makes us human anon. It's also why we can diagnose those who lack empathy with mental disorders or lock them up.

I'll tear up when people cry in anime sometimes. I must have a pretty big brain.

they are able to simulate what other people do/think, to an extent.

learning by observation, inferring emotions via facial observation, etc

The violence must stop.

I'm more of a "complete the violence" kind of guy. IMO, the people saying "stop the violence" have usually just been on a rape and murder and kidnapping child torture spree, and they want to stop the violence before it bites them in the ass.

In order to understand something it must be simulated.

Like IE putting yourself in their shoes. But more than literally within your mind.

I haven’t. Aliens are exactly like us though. Especially if they do things remotely similar and have technology

But is empathy inherently selfish than? You are basically aplying your own survival instinct to others by "putting yourself in their shoes" subconsciously with mirror neurons. So if you see a person or dog in pain your brain tricks you into thinking "hey that could be me" and you feel obliged to help them in the same way you would recoil from touching hot oven.
Also in Prey humans gets overwhelmed by alien hivemind without mirror neurons so they try to implant part of it with them so it could see our point of view trough simulation. I enjoyed the story a lot

Interesting story

Well when you imagine killing someone you’re actually imagining killing yourself.

So there’s a lot of depth to it

I wouldn’t call it selfish because we can’t understand anything without them.

Not even hitting a ball with a bat or what the sound of a peanut cracking is

You have to simulate the hand motion to actually understand the sound of a cracking peanut
