Lol'ed. Good one! :)

I studied CS and completely did not regret it. Like having a basic understanding of AI and understanding how you get from matrix multiplication and a bloody RELU function behaviour that 70 years ago would've been considered human-intelligence is mindblow.

Also evolutionary game theory and evolution of cooperation, Nash equilibria, multiagent systems and their dynamics.

Also Touring Machines dude, freaking amazing how a TM that solves the Halting Problem can't exist because it can't solve itself. Fascinating ideas of what happens once you refer to yourself.

In my country every priest has master degree in theology, it is required if I recally correctly.

Besides that, I think the rest are staying at the university and just study Bible and/or liturgy.

I always thought that theology is somekind of philosophy but for people who are religious (more or less) and/or interested in the Bible.

But anyway I am also suprised that both (philosophy and theology) are mid tier.

How do you know I was "passive aggressive"? Do you mean what I wrote read as being passive aggressive?

>reddit spacing furiously is unstable behavior
LoL? (like genuinely laughed out loud when I read that). I think you might be joking but it sounds like you are being serious right? Why do you say is "unstable behaviour"?

> I wouldn’t be triggered if someone insulted my education or field of research like that
So you felt triggered? I'm sorry for that, I genuinely didn't want to trigger anything. I was simply replying to OP. I don't know what you do but I don't mean to insult any one. I hope my post didn't come off as insulting?

Honestly, I feel like CS as you describe, with algorithms and math is God tier since it basically shows us what can happen once to start doing loads and loads of computations - things like celular automata, game of life, type theory and Russel's Paradox, decidability Godel's Theorems, Kolmogorov Complexity and the link between AI and compression etc

I think it can be a very eye-opening subject if taught right.

Good point, absolutely, in that case it makes sense to focus just on programming for now.

I agree that US uni loans are super-scary I studied in UK where we only had £3000/yr. I still got like £12000 in debt for my degree but with current salary I'm like "I'm not paying monthly interest on that sh*t"

Regardless it's important to learn wherever you go. Good uni or not, learn, be open, be kind and most importantly, ask questions!

Hope this helps!

Are you saying all CS people pretend to be mathematicians? I'm definitely not a mathematician m8. Mathematics is bloody difficult! I can barely have an intuitive grasp of linear algebra. But that's not the point: CS has deep ties to the nature of our universe, there are super difficult problems and important problems in CS as well (just like in Maths and Physics)

Brainlet here. How bad of an idea is majoring in mechanical engineering? I've read not so infrequently that it takes a toll on one's gpa, and if I ever decide to go to grad/professional school, this is obviously less than ideal. Any alternative suggestions?

Undergraduate courses are so simple. The toll on GPA is due to young kids not prioritizing classes that require complex thought. Anyways MechE is all about the internships regardless of GPA. Get that and you'll do fine. Don't get an internship and you'll have a tough time finding a job with a 4.0.
>>11925738
same advice to you, just replace MechE with CS

CS/MechE probably have the best starting incomes for those with just a 4year degree

Thanks for the insight. I was considering mechanical out of my interest in biotech (i.e. biomechanical) and it's purported versatility overall. Though it probably won't change for the following if I still end up being too much of a brainlet for engineering, but what are your thoughts on pure fields like math, physics, etc.? I've read conflicting info about them either being too impractical to be career relevant, or being broadly desirable for the advanced skills they develop, woth magh being the best for the latter. I would think though that being a loicensed engineer would open up more doors, and it's easiest to go that route as an undergrad from what I read as well. It probably doesn't matter in any case though, since if I still end up being too much of brainlet for engineering, I will just as likely be too much of one for these as well.

Pure fields (math, physics, even chemistry) usually don't start to be valuable in career searching until you get a PhD. The engineering majors steal almost all of the good jobs with 4-year degree requirements because their programs tend to focus more on "career relevant" topics.

An alternative is to major in a pure field like math/physics and minor in computer science. If you're dedicated you can turn that minor into valuable programming experience and get hired in some coding-related capacity where your major knowledge is also relevant. For example, writing and running rocket simulations for a defense contractor.

>minor in computer science
This but don't only go for the minimum required number of courses to get this designation, instead pick (4th year) courses based on relevance to what you want to do.

Went back to school because for the 99% stem work is suicide teir pointless trash. got a masters in history. I now(was because of covid) make around 180-220k a year flying around the world recreating museum historical sights and artifacts for digital preservation/new exhibitions. I'm happy. If this doesn't work into the future I'll make autistic history video games with my savings and work for the government for steady income. If you're not trying to fight your way out of poverty, do what you love, but work extremely hard at it. Alright then, for as long as I'm not too much of a brainlet, I will stick with mechanical. I don't think I could cope with going full stemcel studying two stem fields. I am also planning on studying philosophy (or something along those lines) out of interest though, to further develop my skills in communication and abstract/critical thinking, and since the logic portion has some similarity with math.

This is the issue I had with CS in college.
Other degrees, people actually care about what they major in, they'll talk about it for ages, professors will fall head over heels to help you if you ask for it. There are student organizations for everything, even math had a club and they loved it.
CS? All money. Everyone thinks they're the smartest person on the planet for liking computers and picking a "practical" degree. Professors don't give a fuck since they have to deal with these people all the time and are justifiably jaded. Any group is just gonna be a bunch of people playing Smash or Overwatch. Switching out of that was the best decision I ever made.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with that. The average CS job is probably pretty comfy if you have the right mindset for it, and you'll definitely make more money than most. I didn't quit purely because of the major either, there was a point where I realized I didn't love software engineering enough to do it for the rest of my career. Luckily for me, both my parents switched majors back when they were in college as well, so it was a pretty painless experience.

I did a physics major and going to grad school for CS. The physics faculty were genuinely supportive of my goals. They were responsive to inquiries. Same goes for the Math department. I was easily able to get letters of recommendations as well as research opportunities. Summer was still a productive time in my studies.

I haven't started going to classes yet for CS nor met my advisor in person as this Fall will be my first term but I've sent a few emails trying to pry any information I can and it's just "learn Python" and "we will figure it out in Fall". I'm just working on a git project (algo trading bot in python with ML libraries) for now to build my "CS" profile but I'd rather start diving into heavy computational research (which is supposed to be my degree specialization).

Chemistry isn't so bad, I found a good job straight out of a four year degree. You need to get internships and good grades to be in with a chance though, simply because jobs are more scarce.
On the other hand you aren't competing with any of the engineering disciplines, particularly if you spec into organic chemistry.
