>Does economics belong here?

I have taken up self study on economics. I took titles of all recommended books and articles off MIT OCW. My original intention in getting the textbooks was to find PDFs and pull original sources off of them and then weed out all of the textbook filler. Aside from inline examples there aren't sources. This isn't such a big problem. I noticed that later graduate courses really hinge on examining actual events, case studies, and articles. Big plus and they are already organized by topic. Seeing as the MIT textbooks do not provide what I seek, I am looking for an economics book dump. Math included is not necessary, but is also fine. Economic philosophy is a big plus as well, I have no clue of what to look for outside of pop econ.

You don't need to know maths to understand economics. You only need to know concepts. And a single textbook would do the trick.

Unless you want to be a quant/work in developing economic theories. But I guess OP isn't asking for that.

Start with something fun like ha joon chang (optional) then read mankiw macroeconomics along with mankiws microeconomics while watching marginal university on youtube. at this point you know more about economics than 98 percent of people. then you can take off into more mathematical, international and financial economics by following /sci/ wiki's economics category, study historical economics, MMT (probably the most enlightening), post Keynesian economics , neo marxian economics, marxian institutional economics, econophysics, as well as some older economists like pareto, early Austrian school schumpeter, neo ricardians, wicksell etc

if you want to talk economics take it to /lit/ /his/ /biz/ or /pol/.

Short answer is to first read a textbook. The big 3 from when I was in college were the ones by Mankiw, Krugman, and Varian. Any of them are fine but Varian is the most "mathy" iirc. If you can find an older edition for cheap your gtg.

There are other good textbooks. Cowen and Tabarrok's modern principles is readable and great for teaching you what economics actually is but 1. it has a gay cover, 2. it's not commonly used, and 3. it's newer and thus more expensive.

Once you have the basics of modern econ I'd unironically recommend reading some of the older classics of "political economy". Progress and Poverty by Henry George is one of my favorites. Menger, Bohm-Bawerk, Mises, and the "austrians" in general are also worth checking out but I'd recommend not reading them until you understand what they're reacting against first.

That's probably year or two worth of dedicated study right there but once you read all of them you'll be more knowledgeable than 90% of people on the subject. After that you can pretty much just read whatever interests you.

Econlib and marxists.org is a great resource for old books and articles.

Also, most of modern economics is done through academic journals rather than books so google scholar is your friend. And blogs. Blogs are big in the econ world. Check out marginal revolution.

is Mankiw's introduction to economics, Varian's intro to micro and Krugman's Macro econ.

Precisely why financial crises which are caused by governments due to dilettantes happen. If they were as smart as experts, they wouldn't go bankrupt and then commit suicide.
> 2) You make better return on investments if you treat experts in the field as anti-experts (invest in the ones they say are crap)

Very comfortable to use 2 different definitions of experts. This time you are referring to sell-side analysts who are paid to make you buy and not the other way around. Basically the same thing as reviewers in tech business.
> 3) economists cannot reliably predict a recession more than 2 months in advance
> https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/bdm.3960050306
Because the financial markets are too complex to predict basically anything in them. The whole 2008 crisis was known to happen some day, but the experts had no idea when. In the end the crash happened at the time it happened only because government decided to bail out Bear Stearns but not Lehmann Brothers, even though they were really similiar to each other, and there was no reason to bail one but not the other. Experts are there to understand the consequences, and how to deal with them. They have no idea what decision is government going to do most of the time, unless they specifically advise them to do something.
> 4) The more qualified the academic, the less good they are at predicting outcomes in economics > https://www.nber.org/papers/w22566

Because economics as a science uses several assumptions that are sometimes broken by governments. The better you are at it, the more ludicrous some of the decision governments make seem to you.

No I havent even touched the book, I have however finished a degree in economics.
That is even more fucking retarded. He is still wrong but to go "no uh he is not wrong because he says it's his opinion, he says it's fact!" is just asinine. Value can be defined as a what another party is willing to pay for a good (based on the utility it would bring them), consumers are indifferent to the producers cost of producing the good. If two producers create and sell the same good the consumers wont go "hold on a minute, how much did it cost you guys to produce this?" when deteriming how much the want the good (and thus how much they are willing to pay for it), the only thing they'll consider is "how much will this good benefit me if I buy it? How much utility will I gain?"
The only place where labour input in the production of a good matters is for calculating COGS in accounting.

No, you can make predictions about an economy, as above. It's that diletantes are as good at predicting as supposed experts. And more 'expertise' in academic economics actually indicates you'll be worse at predicting.

Unironically study Marx's Capital and Marxian economics. When applied in tandem with mainstream economists one can understand economics pretty well entirely, including where exactly things become obfuscated and difficult to understand -- e.g. with the commodification of labour-power. Economic philosophy follows, and chances are when you read Marx's actual analysis and study his calculations you'll reach similar conclusions as he did.
There are easier works to start with too, like Wage Labour and Capital.
