I saw some very interesting use of ancestral knowledge in agrarian Iran.
Poplar is a tree specie able to stock 5000L of Water per tree.
To retain water, and cut winds, they grow long lines of poplar in between crop fields.

also when an area is logged, essential nutrients are removed from the system, so the trees will never grow back to the same level as they were before.

German "forests" are mostly artificial, old primieval forests are borderline extinct in most of Europe. If maps like this didn't consider "forests" intended for commercial purposes and such it would be much less green. You'll be hard pressed to find old forests outside of Eastern Europe and parts of Sweden and Finland.
