Rockets don't work in space.

When you use logic, reason and actual real science, you realize rockets only work (definition: propel themselves forward) inside an atmosphere. This means they don't work in space. Oh, you're a believer and think rockets really do work in space? Well, sorry for shattering your fantasy world, but it needs to be done.

The plain truth is they don't and can't work in a real vacuum. Any claims of the contrary is a fraud and a lie.

>inb4 you parrot "newtons 3rd law!" like an NPC without any thought involved

That law /isn't/ in dispute here. Appealing to it to "prove" rockets "work in space" shows you don't grasp the fundamental problem here. The 3rd law is 100% correct. When asteroids floating in the vacuum of space crashes into each other, the 3rd law applies. Likewise, the law applies to objects interacting on the ground on Earth, underwater, and in the sky. The 3rd law is 100% real, but it doesn't "do" anything for a rocket when its engine is fired in a perfect vacuum.

You see, the atmosphere gets thinner at higher elevation until it disappears completely (out in space). That's the issue here! And you can't get around that issue. Parroting "newtons's 3rd law!" or throwing math equations around, doesn't magically make the issue go away. That's just you avoiding to deal with reality. Man up and stop avoiding reality.

If you're currently under the "rockets work in space! xd!" spell they cast on you through the entertainment industry and educational system (the indoctrination system), and you want to break free from that spell and shatter the illusion - then see these two educational videos (they play inside your browser):

1st vid: https://files.catbox.moe/dl9ldw.webm
2nd (also important): https://files.catbox.moe/so2rrt.mp4

Once you know that stuff, then you know beyond any doubt rocket technology will never be viable outside of Earth.

No, only surface area is an issue not mass. Mass added to the ISS is brought to the exact same velocity so that doesn't change anything, though it would increase the thrust needed for boosts against drag. It's not enough to be an issue though.

More mass can bring more propellant with it though if it's anything significant so it doesn't actually matter. Plus they can think about aerodynamics if it was ever a true issue. As a practical matter thrusters are plenty enough and the limiter is prop, if you have more mass to throw at things everything in space gets easier. Starship kicking off will completely change the economics. Heck, they could even start consider doing higher stations because radiation shielding actually becomes possible.

>There's always a capsule seat docked for each person on board. The other three will go to the Soyuz, Bob and Doug will go to Dragon.
This is correct, and has been a real limiting factor/risk factor a few times. It's required to always have sufficient evac capacity for everyone on ISS, but the capsules have limited lifetime in space (due to degradation of solar panels, risk of damage, etc). ISS can't be left unmanned either. So NASA has had a few times where they were worried that a failed launch could fuck everything. Having more providers will be a relief in that regard too.

It isn't as simple as drawing the short straw. There are literal international universities set up to produce astronauts. These are people skilled in physics, computer science, leadership, physiology, pretty much any skill you would want in an astronaut. I used to work with one of these people in a startup, she was 100% on the ball and focused most of the time, she was smart but the off putting thing was she was smart 100% of the time. Wrong both ways. NASA is in fact "paying for it", they're the customer here. But for the first time they weren't in charge. SpaceX designed it, built it, maintain it, and ran the launch and all that. And SpaceX is in no way tied to NASA here, they can launch whomever they want with (hilariously minimal) FAA approval.

The big deal isn't that people are there, it's that it's a SUSTAINABLE return to space. Cheap (and going to be much cheaper soon), high cadence, reliable. It's the difference between cars as novelty items and mass production. Mass production was a real innovation and a big deal in and of itself, even if "cars had been done before".

No? They've landed a ton more than that for F9 Block 5. It's also kind of a weird thing to go on about anon given that until SpaceX "explode/crash" was 100% given that nobody tried to land rockets. The only things that landed until then were reusable modules/planes not rockets themselves. SpaceX has landed those just fine too, though this of course will be the first time they do it with a crew.

Starship+Super Heavy will be the true drivers for cost though, and are why SpaceX simply gave up on certain things like a Dragon powered landing system. They know Dragon will be obsolete for their purposes in the near future anyway.

SS/SH though is wild, it might genuinely push prices down to something like $100/kg. In terms of raw material and fuel costs the math works if they can get the engineering, manufacturing, and reuse right. Even at double that though it'd still be genuinely paradigm shifting, <$100k for a ticket to space? Ability to put literally hundreds of thousands of tons up for current budgets? Fucking nuts.

i cum so hard while hurtling through space toward the international space station. slowly, i pull my knees to my chest and close my eyes as my bowels begin to expel hundreds upon hundreds of beautiful, symmetrical turds, brown as the day is long. i laugh like a young girl as my turds drift aimlessly behind me; they are as butterflies to a child frolicking in the fields of elysium. i approach the station’s docking port, flaccid cock in hand, and prepare to float gently into its inviting confines. i extend my cockless arm jubilantly, as to celebrate the majesty and depth of space, and thank jesus christ for this ultimate gift and blessing. but suddenly, my outstretched arm collides with the outer rim of the docking port, and the trajectory of my quaggy body is violently halted. the ftes afford me barely enough time to turn his head before the turds arrive. one thousand turds, each one seemingly larger than the last. i try in vain to cleanse mu eyes of the shitsting, but succeed only in smearing my own fecal matter into a fine asspaste, which slowly seeps into my eyes and nasal cavity. i inhale three hundred and twenty four Space Turds; my lungsare permeated completely with my own shit. i hang lax, spirit broken, defeated by poop. i will never be the same. i am forever a shit faggot

there's something poignant about the image of that hatch with the port/stbd/deck labels

like those terms came about from old seafaring times, can you imagine how mind blown those dudes would have been to imagine a future where we are using their seafaring terms to organise the docking of a fucking space station?

it's just mental

It's a non-issue. We have already reached the functional limit of what visible light ground based telescopes can see anyways. Space telescopes are were the important work is being done these days.

Not to mention in my little backyard telescope satellites go through the FOV in about a half second anyways, barely noticeable.

No, 2 million per launch goal was made in 2019, if they get to 2 million per launch that would be $13 per kilogram. I think they could get to 5 million per launch though. Also Elon made a tweet in 2020 where he expressed that he believed they could the cost to sub 5$/kilogram eventually.
