QUICK RUNDOWN:
In 2011, the Space Shuttle was retired. This ended American manned access to space. Ever since, NASA has been paying the Russians to launch American astronauts on Soyuz rockets. In 2014, NASA selected two commercial partners—SpaceX and Boeing—to develop manned launch systems for a ‘Commercial Crew’ program. The idea was to replace government-operated space launch systems with commercial alternatives, through a public-private partnership. Eventually, NASA will be one customer of many for buying manned launch services from both Boeing and SpaceX, and other companies too.
This launch, Demo-2, is SpaceX’s final major test of their Dragon 2 capsule for this NASA commercial contract. If successful, it means that SpaceX will have a fully certified system to deliver NASA astronauts to space. Furthermore, this launch signifies the return of America’s capability to deliver humans into space, something which has not been possible for nine years. Demo-2 is also the first instance of a privately-owned company launching humans into orbit, and the first manned launch of a truly new spacecraft since Columbia and STS-1 in 1981.
Most importantly, this launch is the beginning of a new commercial age of manned spaceflight. Its importance cannot be understated.
Lastly, when the last shuttle left the International Space Station in 2011, the crew left behind a small American flag. The flag was only to be returned to earth by the next American crew on an American rocket to visit the station. This acted as sort of a ‘race’ between the two commercial crew partners, Boeing and SpaceX, to see who could get the flag first. If Demo-2 is successful, SpaceX will have finally captured the flag.

The astronauts travel in Tesla Model X vehicles out to the pad. The spacesuits are an in-house design by SpaceX. It is similar to the older ACES or Sokol designs in its function as a vacuum-capable life-support system, but not being able to function as an EVA suit.

On YouTube NASA has various videos where they present their yearly astronaut classes. Those videos may be useful for you because the astronauts talk about their backgrounds and they answer questions about their paths that got them to becoming NASA astronauts. The big takeaway I got from those is that NASA wants their astronauts to have a specific skill set. For example, NASA always has at least 1 or 2 medical professionals as part of the ISS crew. This post is the definition of FUD.
They poured thousands of man hours into investigating the problem and discovered that nitrogen tetroxide vapors had moved past a check valve into the helium pressurization system. This wouldn't be too severe a problem if the check valve itself weren't made of titanium. What happened when the system was suddenly pressurized was the helium system check valve slammed closed in the presence of an oxidizer, which briefly provided the temperature and pressure necessary to combust a tiny amount of titanium. Since titanium releases so much energy when it oxidizes, the resulting small explosion caused the helium system to burst, which cascaded into a burst of the hypergolic fuel an oxidizer mix, which produced the far bigger explosion that destroyed the capsule.

The fix was to replace the titanium check valve with an aluminum burst-disk.

The burst disk absolutely will not allow oxidizer to pass backwards into the helium system. The removal of titanium also means that even if the shock conditions were somehow manifest in some other way, while the oxidizer was there for whatever reason, there would still be no combustion.

The problem is now permanently fixed. It will never happen again.

But just because you spend thousands of man hours researching and fixing a foam problem on the shuttle doesn’t mean you found out anything about the frozen O-ring problem. It’s just concerning to ME as an armchair observer that a problem of this magnitude has the potential to detonate when they didn’t even think about it in the first place. Mission elapsed time clocks don't use time zones. It's an *elapsed* time, and they didn't reset it to zero at launch. This might have been a procedural error, but it sure seems like something that should be automated in the flight software.

There were two other problems. One was that the course correction had two modes, coarse (big thrusters) and fine (little thrusters). In true pajeet form, it used the mission elapsed time clock to decide which one to fire. That resulted in the boogaloo of webm related, which used too much fuel and probably caused a thruster or two to fail. There is also talk that one of the thrusters never even fired at all, meaning it was broken at launch.
The third problem was found after they bothered to do a review of their code after the previous problems. It turns out that the spaceship weight value would not be updated after separating from the service module. This would have caused an incorrect burn which would likely have caused the capsule to back up into the detached service module, a possible loss-of-vehicle failure. They uploaded a corrected version before re-entry.
And then there was the ground abort test when one of the four parachutes (three are needed to land safely) failed to open, apparently due to human error when it was installed.
Redundancy is not to cover for bad quality control in software and manufacturing, it's to handle unforeseen problems and should not get used regularly.

It was originally going to be a 2-week mission, but the Dragon that went boom meant that they had to move to the next one for the abort test. That was going to be the original DM-2 capsule, which was not built for a full 6-month mission. So then the Crew-1 capsule became DM-2, allowing a longer mission.

That sleep period is meant to get the astronauts some rest after launch then contol testing but before docking attempt.
