Why don't people understand that the whole point of a lockdown is to ensure the spread of cases of a disease?

Re-opening too soon means a resurgence, which means more old people dying, more middle-age cases, and more deaths.

It's not rocket /sci/ence.

America will re-open because it's an oligarchy run by the richest parts of corporate industry.

Conservatives believe that America is free because people own guns and don't pay much in taxes, but they're literally clamoring at the doors of state capitols for legal permission to literally sacrifice their lives by starting a service job during a deadly pandemic. The overwhelming majority demographic at these anti-lockdown protests are fat, obese white men, who stand to roll a 1/10 chance of death should they actually contract the virus.

there are literally thousands of laws on the book that restrict certain aspects of your civil liberties for public safety

Ben Franklin wouldn't have sided with anti-lockdown protesters. his son died from smallpox and he lived the rest of his life in regret for not innoculating him.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2653186/

"In 1736 I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the smallpox taken in the common way. I long regretted bitterly and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation. This I mention for the sake of the parents who omit that operation, on the supposition that they should never forgive themselves if a child died under it; my example showing that the regret may be the same either way, and that, therefore, the safer should be chosen"

A vaccine isn't really in sight, so a lockdown can only function to keep hoapitals under capacity, right? And last I checked hospitals are still doing fine, so the only real benefit of locking down harder would be to delay cases until we have a better understanding of treatment.

>Why don't people understand that the whole point of a lockdown is to ensure the spread of cases of a disease?
Do you mean to slow the spread? Because that's the important part.
It's not about waiting for it to be eradicated because it never will be without a vaccine. It's not about infecting less people—the time for containment was when China was still lying about the disease and hundreds of thousands of people were moving through Wuhan daily. Now it's about making sure nobody dies for a lack of available health resources like ventilators and hospital beds. "Flattening the curve" does not mean containing or stopping the spread of the virus. A flattened curve has the same exact number of infected spread out over a longer time for the specific purpose of not overburdening healthcare infrastructure.
The lockdown is no longer protecting healthcare infrastructure (it is, in fact, destroying it) nor is it ensuring fewer people get infected because that was never the point in the first place. It is now a placebo which is incredibly dangerous because there is no statistic or metric that can be studied to lift the lockdown if nobody understands its purpose.

I won’t argue that the handling of this has been relatively not great but how exactly do you guys think this would’ve/should’ve gone?

America, specifically NYC which is the epicenter of the outbreak, is probably the world’s single largest transit and commerce hub. The inflows and outflows of people in a place like New York from all over the world in a single day are just insane and all of it runs on an infrastructure which necessitates free and open mobility. There was never any chance of containing a virus to just a few hundred places in a place like New York City and nearly as little chance of being able to contain and treat it. You can’t just build up the necessary conditions to contain something like this overnight. If you’re going to take an issue with something, don’t take issue with the treatments. Take issue with the American “immune system” that makes it so susceptible to an outbreak in the first place. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Everyone seems to want this system in the first place and then bitch and blame when it goes wrong.

When this is all over we should compare rankings of efficacy of covid response with rankings of civil liberties afforded to citizens. I'm confident there's an inverse relationship that needs to be understood is no mistake. Seeing people sincerely and unironically attack civil liberties lobbies and say things like "we need big brother during a pandemic" kills me. No suspension of civil liberties is ever temporary. The problem is civil liberties (ie right to assemble) have been suspended without any clear and obvious metric to determine when they should be restored. Exactly the same thing as what happened after 9/11 and now mass government surveillance has been normalized. If they get their way this lockdown will never lift and large gatherings will never be allowed because the vague, omnipresent threat of virus transmission is a suitable justification to revoke hard-won freedoms indefinitely. And then when any large gatherings can be broken up under the guise of public health safety we lose the right to peaceful protest and religious expression, both hinging on government approval when they should have no say in the matter.
This is the future that has already happened with privacy and is slated to happen with assembly and soon the only way to regain power over the government is violent revolt.

I'm not entirely anti-lockdown, I don't believe in just reopening 100% and carrying on "as normal".
But it's blatantly obvious to see that the mainstream media is pushing this extremist pro-lockdown agenda, based mostly off of dubious non-science, eg. acting like the death rate is still assumed as 3%, acting as if the death rate is uniform across the board for all age groups regardless of underlying conditions, leading to utterly braindead analogies that get 100k retweets and facebook shares like that shit about "durrrr if I gave you 100 skittles and told you 3 of them would kill you, would you eat any of the skittles".
They also latch on to absolute outlier cases, eg. the tiny minority of people who experienced strokes with covid, and publish it as "COVID-19 NOW CAUSING STROKES IN YOUNG PEOPLE" with no context. The media's agenda for whatever reason seems to be to make out that covid-19 is the black death, it causes every possible symptom, it kills anyone of any age group, and if you catch it at any point you are dead. They are actively trying to send the populace into a frenzied panic.

We need a measured lifting of the lockdown, gradually, in steps. Broadly I agree with my country's (the UK) policy with different levels of lockdown to be lifted, slowly, over a few months. But even with that you have the majority of people here going fucking insane and demanding "NNNNOOOOO WE MUST LOCKDOWN BARRICADED IN OUR HOUSES FOR 2+ YEARS UNTIL THERE IS A VACCINE!!"

I'm just sick and tired of this shit. Everyone is manipulating the statistics, everyone has an agenda to push with this virus.

>> No.11672225

>>11672196
The main misconception that lockdown is a feasible way of eradicating the virus is the problem. This has never been the point. The optimal way to achieve enough herd immunity (the only way to eradicate a virus without a cure) is to expose as many low-risk people as possible, below the maximum load of the healthcare infrastructure to avoid incidental deaths while shielding at-risk people as much as possible. It has nothing to do with "money > human lives" or any of that retarded rhetoric. If the people who endlessly quote "Numbers don't lie! Science doesn't lie!" (which is hilariously naive—politicians have been using numbers and science to lie since the beginning of time) actually took a minute to think about the best path forward they would come to the same conclusion.

When lockdown countries are hitting second and third waves and destroying their economies with knee jerk reactions, Sweden is going to be business as usual. This is the point of their strategy and it will be the clear and obvious best approach in retrospect. It will save the most lives, both from the virus and incidental deaths associated with a collapsed economy and lockdown related social and metal issues.

I'm thinking "flatten the curve" is too mathematically difficult for people to grasp that the flattened curve has the same area as the peaked curve.

But the US has better per capita rates than most of Europe, no one seems to understand the U.S is bigger and has more people than Italy and Germany and France and England combined, you cant just compare Germany total numbers to US total numbers.

Is it when you have your first day with no cases? Is it when you get the vaccine? You also know that each day you continue the lockdown, you are increasing the number of lives put in danger for other reasons, such as poverty, depression, etc.

When you take it all into consideration, the decision is not as simple as 'we gotta save the old peeps'

Covid is not going away. You can have an enforced lockdown until there are 0 cases for months and the second you open your borders you will have a resurgence. There is no vaccine coming in the near future.
The point of lockdowns were to avoid hospital backlogs which never happened and the average age of victim is older than the average age of natural death. Think about that for a second.

>County Coroner George Deavers said the person tested positive for COVID-19, but an investigation by him and the pathologist determined the cause of death was ethanol toxicity. The person’s blood-alcohol content was 0.55, or almost seven times the legal driving limit of 0.08 in Colorado, Deavers said. A BAC of 0.3 is considered lethal.

Yeah, bs statistics

>Sweden is going to be business as usual.
Sweden has 3 times the deaths of Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland combined while having a population that is 5 million less. Stop comparing Sweden to the UK, moron.

Radiological weapons are indiscriminate. Same goes for bioweapons.

Why? You've cherry picking as much as the person you're implying is cherry picking. Also the Swedish approach is to intentionally front load their infections instead of dragging it out over a prolonged period. You won't know if their approach is better or worse until the virus burns out or there is a vaccine/treatment.

How am I cherry picking? I'm comparing 5 countries that are culturally, genetically, and governmentally similar. All countries are following what is dubbed the "Scandinvean model". Comparing Sweden to the UK is maximum retardation.

All of those countries because authoritarian Singapore are monocultures. You can't have an effective containment program in a diverse multicultural society where the populous has no group identity to desire to protect. So you have to go the Singapore route, which only works in a small city-state. For large multicultural countries, you're pretty much screwed. Containing the virus requires changes to the foundational structure to such a degree that you end up destroying the very thing you try to save.

Are you mentally retarded? Sorry to resort to name calling but your cherry picked attributes of commonality are just that, cherry picking to justify cherry picking. Congratulations on being a Millennial and try to use Appeal to Meta as a valid logical argument but sadly it's actually a logical fallacy. Try again without cherry picking the results you want.

Once again, "flatten the curve" reduces the daily rate, but doesn't reduce the overall number of infected. A low daily rate means nothing if it goes on for a whole year with multiple spikes while a high daily rate country attains herd immunity after two months.

Okay retard. Explain which countries are more similar to Sweden than Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland? In terms of demographics, populaion density, governmenal policy, cultural norms, etc, etc. Go on dummy, I'll wait.

Are you sure you know what the word "ensure" means?

>Countries that actually handled this crisis well (east Asia, eastern Europe) are right now in a state where the virus is basically extinct on their soil, and almost all new cases, of which there is only relatively small numbers, can be traced to foreign import.
You mean countries that locked down early and hard?

>environment becomes unstable
>people have the desire for understanding and certainty, for control and security and the desire to maintain a positive self-image
>by denying the loss of normality people feel like they have agency ("i know whats going on/It's not real/...")
We lost something, so there is grieving. Notice how it's always losers who fall for conspiracy theories.
Simple as, sneed & seed.
