I put my bet on the brown bear. It has a 4x weight advantage over the gorilla, and the attack strategy of a bear is pretty much just to crush the animal under its weight and chew its face off. Don't see how a gorilla can really defend itself from that.

A gorilla has insane strength and the advantage of being roughly bipedal which gives him much greater control over his movements, intelligence notwithstanding

Part of me wants to say the gorilla because it's fucking huge and has enormous muscles (come to think of it, I wonder whats the probability a gorilla can't build muscle, this would be interesting to investigate, for humans this figure is 25%; I can't build muscle)
So yeah, the gorilla is probably much tougher than the bear, but the bear has claws so the gorilla risks bleeding out before finishing the bear off.

I doubt this is true. For one thing, you'd need a lot of lions, which are difficult to acquire in 1800s California.

And cougars have often killed bears, despite a weight disparity in favor of the bear. I don't think the bears they kill are usually Grizzlies, though.
