Just finished reading this: it was great. Thinking of studying calculus next. Is Spivak's "Calculus" a good choice?

>> No.11633056

bro you just learned how to do arithmetic and you wanna jump straight into complex shizz like derivatives and integrals?
bro

If you just like math its fine but if you want to do anything with it, engineering, physics, I recommend going with Stewart.

>> No.11633069

Spivak is probably above your level right now, as you need some minimal knowledge in algebra and geometry for it. I'd recommend "Algebraic Geometry" by Hartshorne for you to learn before diving into the scary world of calculus.

is this bait?

this book is a way higher level than spivak

You're right, I'm more interested in engineering. Gonna go with Stewart next.

Hmm learning basic algebra at the level of Hartshorne might be a good idea. I thought I would just pick up the bits and pieces of algebra needed on the go. You're probably right tho: shouldn't skip the fundamentals.

What do you mean?

You mean Serre's book? So should I just read Spivak then?

if you read serre and you dont know calculus yet, sure read spivak.

of course it's bait you dumbass. The latter half of Serre is hard analysis.

Thanks! My main interest in calculus is because I want to understand integration on locally compact groups and how it relates to number theory, specifically Tate's thesis.

Why does /sci/ worship this book so much?

It's an excellent meme. You could probably argue it's the single tersest math textbook ever published and it has the same title as the textbooks they give to 4th graders.

Most likely because of this meme.

That's Gelfand and Manin's Homological Algebra.

Shut up, it's a good book.
