The average european has more intellect than the average philosophy major. At least they aren't stupid enough to waste their lives pursuing a moneyless hobby.

>> No.11592428

Philosophy is a very interesting degree and will probably be more applicable down the road. A large percentage of world leaders have philosophy degrees. Most world conquerers are wel knowledged in the subject too. I think employers probably over look it’s utility. People who are good at philosophy are usually excellent readers, writers, problem solvers, and critical thinkers. All of what I said is backed by numbers. After I finish my BA in business I’m going for a masters in philosophy. I’ve learned so much from that subject.

Must reflect their uncanny obsession with intellectual self-image, not actual ability, no? There are better armchair philosophers than PhD students. Philosophy is made, not learned in a sterile environment.

There’s a lot of history and great works already established in philosophy. Studying it teaches you how to think like a philosopher. It’s also very dense at times and good teacher can guide you through the exact meaning of certain works that you would otherwise struggle with. It’s definitley prone to amateurs being up there with well versed doctors though, but so is computer science.

>> No.11592497

>>11592436
I think the stereotype of them studying only to brag about their degree is kinda wrong. It’s a pretty hard subject with little payoff, the people that study it will probably tend to be passionate about it. I’m sure some of that exist though

Von Neumann as well as all the other great physicists and mathematicians of his time were all philosophers as well as scientists.
It's a recent thing for physicists and other STEM midwits to hold disdain for philosophy.

Science has become much more disciplined. Long gone are the days when you can just let your imagination take you places. And it's nearly impossible to truly excel at a field now due to the increased level of sophistication.
No wonder why so many scientists are leaving for private enterprise...

It's not something that should be a university topic, though. Think of it like a writing degree (prose that is; novels and whatnot). No legendary novelist became legendary through his education. They became brilliant writers through practice and working with/critiquing/talking with others, which can be done in a place that doesn't require significant debt to be. Unlike other degrees, philosophy has no requirement for the rigor of a PhD program to become proficient. People who pretend you need to "start with the greeks" are stupid, and even if they WERE correct, you can do that online, as do many naturally talented philosophers. It's pointless, and what have educated philosophers provided to society apart from filling the pockets of ursurpers? We live in the information era. It is no longer needed to live in a university to create anything of intellectual value.

And he's not talking to kids, he's talking on national TV.

The man with supposed superhuman speed and throughput needs to jumble his words like a retard before spewing some twitter-tier hottake with no nuance? Guy is a fruad. I bet he either paid his friends to boost his renown, or set up little "miracles" as an illusion type trick. Because from what I've seen most of his acclaim is based on hearsay and his friends claiming how good he is.

Aside from Krauss's, none of the quotes on the right disagree with any on the left. Also, they are single quotes, taken out of context, used to supposedly describe one's entire thoughts on philosophy of science. The creator essentially aims to categorize those people based on those particular quotes rather than consider things from a more open perspective.
