Why sail across the oceans and circumnavigate the world?
Why fly across a continent in a contraption made of balsa wood with a small bike engine?
Why race other people in vehicles specifically engineered for speed?
Why make flying vehicles that can break the sound barrier?
Why put Men into orbit?
Why go to the Moon?

Because those things are there. Because we can. Humans don't NEED to go to Mars, we WANT to go to Mars. To prove that we can. To see the surface of another world with our own eyes. To find out what is there.

Humans will go to Mars for no other reason than because we can.

He said he's worried that the rate of innovation won't sustain us to a foreseeable future to Mars. This strikes me as odd as I assumed that the general consensus is that innovation is growing at an incredible rate ever since the early 90's, Moore's Law, etc, it seems a strange concept to suddenly say innovation has stagnated. Is he perhaps worried that there will be some kind of global instability that delivers a devastating blow to research and tech fields?

The rate of innovation has been slowing down since the 90s. Moore's law isn't even used anymore. 99% of the technology we use has barely budged in the past 50+ years, the only things that's still innovating the tech field and that's been slowing down at an alarming rate. Whenever we stop innovating, that's going to be the limit of humanity unless there's some major breakthrough in physics at the level of electromagnetism (not happening).
Don't be sad though, it's obvious that this growth coudn't continue forever. We're just going to have to accept the fact that technology will never reach sci-fi levels, a simple trip to Mars will be a multi-decade impractical effort with no way to speed it up.

That's really the result of stagnating wages. Back in the 50s a family could plan to buy an outrageous expensive item, at the time, like a microwave. Today, nobody dreams in that stuff particularly when you have wage slaves. Controlling for inflation , something like a microwave in the 1950s would have costed 12000$ today.

Nobody is going to pay 12000$ today for, say, an automated kitchen robot that could cook for you, and it would never make it into the market, when it has to compete with a very poor paid delivery driver from UberEat.
