Should I try to go to a high-ranking university or will a military academy be better? I want to learn how to make rockets and planes but I also want to be able to study military secrets on thermonuclear weaponry (lolterrorist) and the fact that I could go into a space exploration program.

Are the Ivy Leagues just all talk or are they truly the best when it comes to teaching, access and future opportunities?

Harvard is the best. If you get accepted you could do whatever you want. Have a sociology degree? YOU'RE AN ASTRONAUT. Dropout? YOU'RE THE NEXT PRESIDENT BOY.

im a grad student at a public ivy.. and let me tell you, there hasnt been a single relevant paper --at least in the field of ecology or developmental biology-- that came from harvard. The public ivies are the best universities to study life sciences.

Now if you want to go to engineering and physics probably you should consider Berkeley, Caltech, UT Austin or Penstate.
Harvard, Princeton, Yale and UPen is where the Federal government agencies and corporations train their CEOs..

>> No.1156451

It's a university that is connected to a national forces regime. So like "Canada Military Uni" or "U.S. military Uni". You get military training on top of your academic studies plus they pay for it all and guarantee a career. The issue is that at some point, you must serve. As an engineer or an actual marksmen fighter pilot whatever, you must. for x years they state.

The Ivy Leagues are great (especially the big three, Harvard, Yale, Princeton) and a degree from one of them will open doors to almost anywhere, but there are non-Ivy League that are just as prestigious. MIT, CalTec, Stanford are extremely good, but others that are still recognized as a selective degree include Johns Hopkins, other Ivy Leagues like Columbia or Brown, Berkley and maybe Northwestern or University of Chicago. For a list of great universities see

good luck OP, world needs more hard working, driven science directed people

>> No.1156538

The Ivy league is like the Pac-10 or the SEC. It's simply a college sports conference. Many of the schools are top tier but they more or less function like any other top tier school.

The only real difference is that the American aristocracy tends to send their kids to the Ivy leagues so it can be easier to network with blue blood types.

High ranking universities are mainly useful for networking. These are the places that the children of the rich and famous go to study... also places where societies like the Skull and Bones recruit.

The thing is... networking at places like that is only useful if you are ALREADY a member of the upper class. If you are not then it's just a very expensive ordinary school. The people that graduate from those places and get cushy jobs don't do so because of where they graduated from they do so because of family connections.

A military academy will offer a far superior learning experience with better opportunity to work on top secret projects afterwards. Much like the 'social elite' the military can be a pretty closed society. Also if you hope to set up your own business afterwards the US military is the largest closed market in the world. People make a fortune just developing and selling technology to the US army.

Since you are very focused in the kind of work you want to do, you should check where do the agencies you are interested in hire from and what companies are working with the government in your projects of interest. Regardless, go for the "better" names in universities, like said here before, that is where the "cool kids" are at and if you have not learned this already: the people you know matter. If you don't believe anything of what has been said here I suggest you actually look at the histories of people with lives you want to aspire to.

The Ivy League unis, being as old as the nation (just about), have the money to bring world-renowned faculty to its campus, giving you access to people who you normally could barely get an interview with. Then, you also get alumni connections that tend to be very high up in their respective firms and that can get you various advantages.

>> No.1156641

Ivy league? For hard/applied science?
Very few are good at that. These are liberal arts and business colleges.

>> No.1156642

>>1156627

Exactly.

Networking isn't just about skull and bones. Academic networking is also critical and elite universities have the highest concentration of super bad-asses. Simply put: they can afford them.

Actually, that's another good thing about the Ivy's. They have shit tons of endowment and shit tons of grant money. If you need money for research or a conference, you'll have an easier time getting it at a rich school. I had no idea how important this could be until grad school.

The other thing that no one's owning up to here is that there's a huge chance that you're going to want to be doing something completely different in four years. A top tier school (like an Ivy or anything in the top 20) will have you covered no matter what you decide to do.

Ivy league schools CAN ONLY get world renowned names.

most people do not understand how research works in an academic setting:

1) you just finished your post doc and you get a job at XXXX university as an associate professor.

you have no research group yet.

you are given an office and a startup grant. the startup grant is used to buy some chemicals/tools/computers/whatever BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO GET LAB SPACE

lab space is not simply allotted to you by the university. you actually have to pay them to rent it from them.

you pay them for the lab space itself (rent), A/c heating, hazmat, DI water, janitorial services, etc.

you also pay for instrument use for shit you cannot afford (like expensive spectrometers and related stuff that is not a specialty of your field requiring you to own one for yourself)

2) you accept a few graduate students, who work as TAs in order to get money

YOU (the PI) have to pay for their tuition, or you have to get them to win Grants or scholarships.

Graduate level education in the physical sciences in the US is "free" for the student (in other words, you are not expected to pay it out of pocket, and incredibly few people do this)

3) after a few years and several papers, you get another grant.

you are building prestige, and soon you get offered a job at Harvard

Problem?

harvard's Graduate tuition is 7 times as expensive as it is at a UC.

each graduate student will cost you about $70,000/year AT MINIMUM, and the lab will cost a shitload, AND you will have to pay for a bunch of other crap.

the only people who can afford to do research at Harvard and Yale are professors who have the prestige that will easily allow them to get multimillion dollar grants REGULARLY without having to sweat.

Military loves to send their people back to school.

there are fucking shitloads of colones with PHDs in multiple different fields.

the problem is that you get PHDs from random "academies" and you basically have to make a name for yourself (most of the faculty are not very well known)

Don't specialize too early. You will loose nothing by going to a top tier school that has good programs across multiple disciplines. Which top tier school doesn't matter.

The military institutions have their own cultures which many people wouldn't be able to deal with. Going to an MI is a lifestyle choice: it only makes sense if you like their lifestyle. If you have doubts that take the other route.

But seriously, you have no idea what you'll be doing in ten years. Give yourself as much flexibility as possible,
