A (female) friend is PhD in physics. There was a "women in science" part of a conference, where she attended. First action of the organizers:
"I want all the women in the audience to come upstairs. Good, and now I want everyone in the audience to clap for what these marvelous women have achieved".
I don't have the pic of this unfortunately, but the cringe in almost every woman's face is priceless.

There are absolutely fantastic women in science. They stay away from horseshit like this though. It's only used to get mediocre posters and papers on display which would otherwise get no attention at all and some backpatting.
