protists?
We almost never talked about them, not even in microbiology class.
I just know they present both plant and animal features since we come from choanoflagellates, and they are fundamental in ecotoxicology since some of these bastards are toxic, and annually kill much of the ocean fauna. They cause mass killing of fish if their concentration in the water is too high, and if we don't run analysis on the fishes we catch we can get a bunch of diseases like ciguatera poisoning.
These fuckers produce many biotoxins for some reason.

Single-celled organisms that happen to be more often than not extraordinarily large for single-celled organisms. They are heterotrophs even though some of the protozoans have incorporated chloroplasts. Their DNA (at least in some of them) is located both in a small and in a big nucleus. The small nucleus is primarily responsible for reproduction and the big nucleus for chemical processes within the cell. Any protozoa can reproduce by forming clones. Many of them however mate in a process called conjugation similar to sexual reproduction where the DNA of two protozoans are combined to create new protozoans. They are mostly found in freshwater where there is a lot of organic matter (algae, plants, bacteria). The most popular and well-known protozoans are paramecia and amoebae. They eat by phagocytosis, food is digested in vacuoles. They are prone to sudden bursting of their membra.
