If I wanted to learn Math from an absolute begginer level, which path do you recommend? I am really good at visualizing in my mind. It's a clear and detailed image which I can freely rotate and modify. My processing speed and intuition would put me in the extremely gifted category. Thing is, I never really had proper schooling. Kind of figured out things on my own. I know the basic high school math, some calculus, some linear algebra but I feel like the base of all of that knowledge isn't stable. If we were to assume the only math knowledge I have is summing and multiplying 3 digit numbers in my mind fairly quick, what beginner books and book paths would you recommend for me to reach a higher understanding of math. Maybe even make a data science / machine learning career out of it.

The ability to do mental arithmetic has no correlation with mathematics. A dollar store calculator can outperform any human when it comes to arithmetic. Do you have any experience with proofs?

>The ability to do mental arithmetic has no correlation with mathematics.
That's an exaggeration, since both skills generally correlate with IQ. But it's true that mental arithmetic isn't a skill most people spent time on specifically in this day and age.

Thanks. But doesn't that seem a bit too complicated for an absolute beginner?

>a bunch of relatively deep shit that people don't begin even touching until university, if at all

fucking snarky as hell ngl, don't even pretend like you don't know what op is talking about

OP, you're right, that stuff is way too complicated for an absolute beginner. I'm in the exact same shoes as you.

Right now we should be working on arithmetic (decimals, mixed numbers, fractions), then prealgebra (differential equations, quadratic formula, combining like terms), basic geometry, etc...

I suppose then it's time for Algebra 1 & 2, Trig, Pre-Calculus, from there Calculus, Linear Algebra, etc.. and then we can touch the shit in the top of his pic. It's pretty evident that that image is flaunting >>11458435

Watching PatrickJMT videos on YouTube was my starting point

t. someone who had to start by taking remedial math classes in a CC at the beginning of last year and is now taking Calc 2

I still use PatrickJMT videos, but I also having been using Prof Leonard videos and to some extend Wildberger, 3blue1brown and ProfRobBob

The meme is purposefully geared towards abstruse material and presents an intentionally unreasonable starting point for learning mathematics. If anybody points this out they will be derided as a "brainlet" by people who didn't and could not possibly have gone through it at the ages prescribed by the infographic.

Do the whole Khan Academy math suite from the beginning. If/when you reach a concept that is a bit challenging, use a textbook for better supplementary practice problems. Progress slower than you think you need to, not because it's necessarily difficult, but because it takes longer than one set of practice problems to cement a concept in your head. Spread things out. Do at least two separate sessions of practice problems for a given concept, spaced out on different days.

Look for test materials online to periodically confirm your overall progress. Go back and review concepts that aren't literally 100% proficient.

I honestly recommend just taking a college algebra class then go from there
You'll learn it very reliably that way at least I did
Also take it seriously even if it seems easy that foundation will serve you to an extreme degree for your entire mathematical career don't underestimate its importance

High school algebra:
higher algebra -hall & knight or barnard & child
If the above books are too tough ,u could probably start off with intermediate algebra by Pearson publication.

Calculus:
Calculus by Thomas and Finney, problems in calculus of 1 variable by
I A maron.

Combinatorics:
Principles & techniques in combinatorics by CC CHUANG, introductory combinatorics by Richard Brualdi

Trigonometry:
Trigonometry by SL Loney.

Euclidean geometry:
Geometry by SL Lang

Coordinate or analytical geometry:
Elements of coordinate geometry by
SL Loney

Inequalities:
An introduction to inequalities by E Beckenbach

Number theory:
Elementary number theory by
David Burton

I have mentioned 2 books for some topics .It is up to u to pick one and use the other for reference. If u are able to complete all of the above topics in 12-15 months ,u are a top 50 Computer science or mathematics major material.Be warned, this journey will be difficult.U can use math stack exchange, art of problem solving and other forums for Ur doubts.

GOD BLESS U & MAY THE FORCE BE WITH U

Most people don't even know Pedmas dude. Their mathematical knowledge doesn't go beyond division. It should be starting with basic geometry. Like BXWXH to find the area type shit. it needs an elementary school refresher.
