Hello, welcome to my /asg/ - Actic Science General.
This is where you talk about based science here. The word Actic is just the name of this general.
As you may know, the coronavirus has become quite an epidemic, people are confused.
Is it like the past epidemics like SARs, Ebola, Swing Flu, etc? Which means we have nothing to worry?
Or...
Is it a flu that's quite different and we should worry about it as it could kill a lot of humans? Discuss.

For the /pol/tards and schizos:

“Given that cases typically die 1-3 weeks after onset, the case-fatality rate can artificially be reduced with an initial wave of newly diagnosed, new onset cases,” said Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. “Only after three weeks to a month can you calculate a reliable case-fatality rate for that group with onset the month before. So I think the case-fatality rate will go up, not down in Korea in the 30 to 60 days ahead.”
Only time will tell. Also, there was a 30 year old doctor who died, so the whole "this 98 year old woman survived so this is a nothing burger" is not a valid argument. +80% of people above 80 survive, this is not indicative of anything other than "it can be survived".

I'm more interested in the extremely small percentage of severe patients that Korea has. The number of overall cases is similar to Italy yet the severe patient count is closer to Japan, which has nowhere near those numbers. I know this is somewhat due to differences in testing. Another interesting point is that all three countries confirmed their first cases by the end of January, with Italy confirming their first case a whole week later. I honestly don't understand why the data for the development of covid outside of China is kind of all over the place.

"Beijing among others within the provisions of the ‘Treatment and Prevention Law’ instituted collective quarantine for 12000 people by completely sealing off hospitals, construction sites, residential buildings and universities. In some rural areas in China, entire villages were cordoned off, e.g. in Hebei Province"

"Quarantine of contacts was applied in all reviewed countries, yet China in its decision to apply quarantine on a wide scale by declaring epidemic zones and placing people under collective quarantine in villages or institutions outdid the other countries. Shanghai for instance placed people from Beijing under quarantine even in the absence of symptoms (Huang 2004)."

"Such a large scale quarantine might have been effective for China because of its unique situation as many of the initial SARS cases in Guangdong were food handlers or sold wild animals (Xu et al. 2004) along with the fact that more than 65% of cases in Beijing did not have a contact history during the later phase of the epidemic (Wu et al. 2004) but generally its effectiveness for containing SARS was questioned as only a very small percentage of quarantined individuals developed SARS (Bell and WHO working group on prevention of international and community transmission of SARS 2004; Day et al. 2006)."

Forbiden anyone from entering or leaving the city, shut down the metro, banned driving, banned going out exceot for shopping, people leaving houses having their temperature checked, later even banned going out for shopping altogether and order people to order food. Well, lets see here

1) you are able to be infected and have a 28 day window where you are infectious but not symptomatic.
2) looking at resolved cases the death rate is between 7 and 15%, we will get better numbers later on when we can remove chinas lies from the statistics, but the current number is reported to be 3.7
3) 20% of cases require hospitalization
4) the japanese nurse/doctor who got reinfected.
5) it lasts 9 days on a surface

what this means is unlike the other ones where you get sick fairly fast, this one can slip passed a border and you may never know ground zero for where the infection started, this makes the infection spread bad.

the way mortality rate is calculated is total infections vs death, while the real mortality rate is resolved cases, this way you can manipulate what the death rate is to try and hold back panic

20% hospitalization will mean this gets expodentially worse and if it goes full blow its everywhere, people will die just due to hospitals not being able to handle an epidemic in the us.

The japanese doctor/nurse who had it, got over it, and re got it again gave rise to new concerns
1) its multi pahasic, not sure if this was ruled out or not but now we are getting into the territory of what anthrax is.
2) we gain no immunity to it, given how log it stays 'dormant' how long it stays on surfaces, and how we would have to evacuate a place for 2 weeks or so to even call it safe, while you may be a carrier and re infect the area... its not good
3) it mutates so fast that a new strain happen that fast, and at that point, we are likely fucked as a species
4) it was a total fluke.

Largely, this is serious, this will get fuckin bad, but how bad is in the air because china lied at every step of the way, and the west wont go martial law till shit is beyond to late.

It may be possible that other people have it. But those two patients are the only two people who fit the CDC guidelines for testing. Literally there aren't enough tests to just be testing everyone with the correct symptoms, they have to be critically ill. well lets see here, and i'm not googling it fir a 4chan thread

china numbers were that it could be in a person for 14 days before they show signs of infection and are able to spread, they later said up to 28 days but apparently most of the world won't acknowledge the 28 day number despite time and time again seeing people go asymptomatic for more then 14 days and getting out of quarantines.

take the number of resolved cases and divide death, depending on the source for numbers, that was as high as 50% at some points but has settled a bit lower at 7-10 currently, I can't wait to toss china numbers out entirely as they poison this data set. but globally its aconolages at a 3.7% death rate currently unless something drastic happened today.

every sample size so far has seen 20% of all cases needing hospitalization

and 9 days on surfaces was from a bio research lab out of india if I remember the where correctly.

the japanese nurse/doctor, this was a recent thing so I don't know if this was ever resolved which is why I have 4 outcomes there, but bio researchers were leaning toward the possibility of number 1, I don't know if it was them preparing for the worst and hoping the best.

well... the fact that it has spread like it has, means its a pandemic but people who can officially name it as such, don't want to due to the mass panic that will come from it.

y2k, while it was real, was also solved for the most part by patches, funny thing is some of those patches lasted till 2020 and when 2020 kicked around what would have happened at y2k happened, its kind of retarded, but because of how known the y2k issues was it was dealt with but the other ones that are the same problem aren't because no one is paying attention.

there is a major difference between sars and covid, sars didn't have carriers who were asymptomatic infectious for up to the better part of a month with most being 2 weeks, it was FAR more containable, sars also wasn't airborne (I believe covid is)

the fact of the matter is, what we know about covid at this point, we are ill equipped to handle a massive outbreak, and we aren't dystopian enough to stop it before shit thoroughly hits the fan.

what we know is this
>Fuck, covid hit this area, where now we got to trace back 14+ days of contact to see where it came from
>We can't do that
>We need to lock the areas down to make sure the spread is contained
>We can't do that
>People have to stay inside and not go out
>We can't do that

Now, I hope covid ia sars 2.0 and its overblown shit, or its not as deadly as it is when you take resolved cases into account and not go

>hurrdurr, there are 140000 people infected and only 3000 died, its such a low mortality rate
>Sir, only 13000 people have cases resolved, there are still over 20k in icu
>DURR Nope, we use total cases to tell you death rate, not resolved because this is the smart thing to do

I hope that before shit thoroughly hits the fan a vaccine is created and its an easy in and out one dose, I really do, but im not looking at this hopefully when I look at how little it would take to completely disrupt supply lines, how much we relied on china for key items, and how the public will react when they see the signs of supply line problems.

No, I never said they spread it, I said they were the indirect reason they spread, they kept telling the media 'stop closing borders, open borders to anyone'. When there are less illegal aliens, we can finally close the borders.
There are even illegal aliens wanting to free healthcare, so doctors spend more time on them and less time on the actual citizens. Slowing down the cure research for the COVID-19, less illegal aliens, curing more actual citizens which speeds up cure research,

the people most likely to cross are people who think they are going to get something, be it a job, a better life, or help, and people needing help are going to be great carriers, I mean how many cases of serious illness were found in the caravans that tried to cross?

1 person to infect one there, that person has poor hygiene, and more people are infected. and the problem then just gets worse and worse.

The problem isn't just the deaths, it's permanent lung damage. If you suffer from a severe case (20% on infected people do), fibrosis will permanently reduce lung function, paving the way for other health issues.
Also, 20% of people need hospitalization. If you don't think that's a problem, you have no idea how badly hospitals are overbooked already.

Here: Heboa is a protein, it has the same function as the protein in (HE) but has proven to be much more stronger, and not found in any virus yet. It has been injected into bats. It has been found in some labs before the COVID-19 outbreak.

homeastasis is a process by the brain that reacts to differences to the environment, viruses don't have a way to cool down so they die. that's the point of heat, even the coronavirus will die to due heat.

Does the virus actually build up into your lungs like glue, totally sealing it shot from the bottom to the top over a period of time?

Apparently even the mild cases in China were bedridden, pneumonia, felt like they we're going to die for 2 weeks straight irreversible lung damage, etc.

if it's spreading this easily the chances of everyone getting it are so high it's stupid. Many herd immunity will save the day, because one things for certain the US healthcare system certainly won't.

I stand by my original post. (pic)

The reported 3% death rate is bullshit.

When extensive testing is conducted, the death rate falls to levels similar to those of the common flu (0.1% corona death rate in Germany).
Mostly elderly people and those with underlying health conditions are seriously affected, most of the infected are asymptomatic, which again is consistent with a low death rate. Most people with mild cases aren't going to the doctor.

The entire thing is a repeat of the 2009 Swine Flu panic which started with a reported 7% death rate. The real rate ended up being less than 0.09%, which means Swine Flu ended up being less dangerous than the common flu.

I hope all the financial bears, shill journalists and panic-prone hack doctors and epidemiologists are sued into poverty for destroying the world economy.

A lot of doctors prefer to err on the side of "better safe than sorry", bit crying wolf over every new virus is a terrible policy because one day we are gonna get a real world killer pandemic (ie. a rogue MARV strain) and nobody will listen to the WHO because of the 2009 and 2020 fiascos.

>> No.11456982

>>11456918
More than 4k people have died to something that is socially transmissive and therefore entirely avoidable. Given the failure of complete containment, this figure is expected to rise as the virus continues to spread across the globe.
>I hope all the financial bears, shill journalists and panic-prone hack doctors and epidemiologists are sued into poverty for destroying the world economy
And I hope the downplaying conformists who care more about the portfolios of financial speculators - and whose first response was to smear those concerned as alarmists and fear-mongers - similarly suffer. Every single death after late December was avoidable, but depended on the pro-activity of politicians. It is very easy, in early March, to say that we did well in hindsight given that the fatality rate is so low, but this was less clear a a month or two ago in a quickly-moving situation. If this had been the real "world killer pandemic" we'd all be fucked right now as no single country seems to have contained it. This should stand as a lesson for more decisive action next time, but instead people like yourself use it as another opportunity to bash reactive policies and those that were even a little concerned in the first place. Unbelievable.

If the starting death rate was 3% (swine flu was 7%) then it was evident the rate was gonna drop once better methods to detect the virus were available. "Better safe than sorry" is not a good excuse, there should be better methods to assess the real lethality of a disease before throwing the world into a panic.

More people are going to die from the economic distress caused by the panic (recessions kill people) than from the coronavirus, but those deaths are not as easily quantifiable.

As of today you still more likely to get struck by lightning (6000 deaths a year) than to die from coronavirus.

I refuted this point last month, I wonder if you're the same anon. 4k dead/3 months is emphatically a higher rate than 6k dead/12 months. And, again, this rate is bound to increase significantly in the months ahead. It's interesting though that in the same post you advocate for diligence and better assessment procedures to avoid misinformation and speculation, you also shit out highly speculative estimates as though they are gospel. The figure you gave is THREE TIMES HIGHER than the lower estimate made by NatGeo. Why you being so alarmist about lightning strikes?

>people are going to die from the economic distress
Stop panicking, anon. Your concerns about the economy amount to fear mongering and will do more harm than good. We should wait a few months until economists can produce highly accurate predictive models for the prospective economic implications before raising alarm or acting. If anything, their forecasts will be too pessimistic because a bunch of panic-prone hack speculators like yourself are shilling a a literal nothingburger recession and hampering consumer and investor confidence. The economy is fine.

Close to all of the passengers aboard the cruiseship Diamond Princess has been tested, thus giving very good indications for various properties.

Tested: 3618
Confirmed cases: 696
Asymptomatic cases: 410
Dead: 7
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_outbreak_on_cruise_ships#Diamond_Princess

Indicates that [math]\approx 59[/math]% of cases are asymptomatic and a mortality rate [math]R \approx 1[/math]%. With this information we can estimate a lower bound for the number of infected world wide. Let [math]I_a[/math] be the acutal number of infected world wide, [math]I_r[/math] the number of reported infected, [math]D_a[/math] be actual number of dead and [math]D_r[/math] the reported number of dead. This means
[eqn]
R = \frac{D_a}{I_a}
[/eqn]
and
[eqn]
k = \frac{D_r}{D_a} \iff D_a = \frac{D_r}{k}
[/eqn]
for some [math]0 < k < 1[/math]. Substituting into the first equation gives
[eqn]
R = \frac{\left( \frac{D_r}{k} \right) }{I_a} \iff I_a = \frac{D_r}{Rk}
[/eqn]
Right now we have [math]D_r > 4200[/math], thus
[eqn]
I_a > \frac{4200}{0.01k} = \frac{420000}{k} > 420000.
[/eqn]

The median time from emergence of symptoms to death for those that die is 14 days (with range 6-41 days) [https://doi.org/10.1002/jmv.25689]. Thus this estimate reflects the number of infected 14+ days ago (there might be some delay in recording a death).

You're comparing apples to oranges. The flu's death rate is not calculated through extensive testing either, it's calculated through people who seek medical treatment and are diagnosed. The flu's actual death rate is substantially lower than the 0.1% figure, for the same reason why you point out COVID-19's death rate is substantially lower than what is visible.

The comparison still stands. COVID-19 is still at least an order of magnitude more deadly than the flu, at bare minimum.

What's the deal with this 'reinfection'?
Normally one would say that the immune system will have encountered it once already and bring in antibodies to make it a nonissue.

So why the reinfection? Does the immune system never build up a resistance? Is it mutating? Or are the tests to detect it not foolproof?

The article is speculative and reinfection isn't the same thing as a relapse. Relapses are likely to be less severe than acute infection in immunocompetent individuals. The big takeaway if this is true is that treating with immunosuppressive therapy may worsen outcomes down the road. That being said I wouldn't really take 8% of people having a headache as evidence of neurological symptoms when everything else is pointing to viral pneumonia.

Not sure what to use for R/E here. I do think it is going to be lower than this for quite a while, but I don't want to overestimate. As we saw in China >>11460624, it stabilized as testing catched up. It might stabilize if testing capacity stabilize as well.

>> No.11460747

quite simple guys

>young people dont really get affected although it is possible in rare cases
>however virus is contagious and spreads quickly and easily
>old people are very likely to get affected very very badly
>if too much spread of infection, lots of old people go to hospital at the same time
>huge strain on health services, not enough to save all these old people
>young people must also be prioritised if suffer the illness badly
>mortality COULD be 0.1% but instead is 4% because no one took this seriously enough
>in the UK (where i live) this basically amounts 1 million people (mostly old people) dying.
>really fucking bad for economy, also holy shit, that's a lot of people dying in one country, what the fuck
>now take into account every other country currently fighting virus
>uh oh

with social distancing and strict lockdown procedures we could get this down to 39,000 in the UK dying in theory but damn, a lot of old people (and others) are still going to die around the world.

you better be glad that most of our generation are going to survive but that doesn't make this any less horrific

Not a chinese apologist, I'm pointing out that fascist methods are required to lock down a disease like this and europe and the US are buttfucked to actually do that well.

meanwhile, China doesn't give a shit if it welds people inside their own homes for basically all the reasons you gave, so they're going to have an easy time preventing it from spreading more or getting back into their country.

So the US and europe are going to get ravaged by this while china will get off relatively easy, and since china has an abundance of people won't really mind the losses of life that much (Fuck, decreasing their population is something they've been TRYING to do), so they'll be back on their feet business as usual in about a year, while its going to take much longer for the west to recover.

>> No.11461297

>>11460957
Upward economic mobility in the US has literally only occurred after massive losses of lives, I'd imagine the same is true of Europe though I'm not as educated in economic history there. Especially if boomers are disproportionately affected, as all indications point to, this will probably prevent social security from collapsing indefinitely and also open up more positions which younger people can fill and actually afford to start families off of. On the contrary, China's economic problems are mostly based off of their fraudulent construction industry and hyperinflated housing market and probably won't resolve without complete economic collapse since CCP officials and wealthy Chinese seem to be more concerned with buying foreign property to avoid the aftermath as opposed to regulating the market so millions don't end up starving to death or resorting to cannibalism in cities once the farmers start realizing the renminbi they've been trading for rice are now useless.

>> No.11461383

>>11461297
The upward mobility wasn't due to the massive loss of life in WW2, it was due to FDR taking absurdly radical (For the time) pro-populist steps (Such as creating things like government monetary aid to the populace and being pro union).

the loss of this is due to union breaking and pro business legislature, its not going to magically come back when boomers die.

Upward mobility was probably greater after the Civil War than in the late 40s-50s and can't be explained by populist legislation since a sizeable proportion of the population was disenfranchised and forbidden from homesteading.

good maths but diamond princess customers are a very bad representation of the average global person. Their age, diets, race, and everything else about them would be skewed. Fuck no, let me put it this way. Its a VERY easy to avoid disease in the west, and actually getting it by helping people with it is also low. do you honestly think world governments would send teams in to treat and contain if it JUST killed people in the more retarded places in the world?

Ebola is a disease that evolves into it, each strain is different, the fear, and why we clamp that shit down as fast and hard as we do is because of how rapidly the fucking thing evolves and the fear if we do nothing it will go airborne.
