Child geniuses are memes. You've never heard of child geniuses discovering anything new, contributing to math or science, because that doesn't happen. They're still developing, and these are simply kids who develop a bit faster, and are a bit smarter than the average kid his age (who is retarded). I'd be willing to bet almost everyone on /sci/ right now who's over 20 is at least as smart as boy in OP. 19-30 is peak mental age and the age at which you actually make contributions.
It's almost all about how you spend your time. Being a social outcast can help.
>In high school I used to do problems for more advanced classes. I was then in a boarding house in Nimes, staying with children older than I was, and they used to bully me. So to pacify them, I used to do their mathematics homework. It was as good a training as any.

Ignorance is pain and suffering. Knowledge is power. The people who say "ignorance is bliss" are invariably insecure brainlets who are themselves completely ignorant of any advances in science, mathematics or any other field, most often poor as well. If you think ignorance is bliss, why don't you bash your head against the wall a couple dozen times, see how you like the new "mode" of intelligence.

You misunderstood what I said. Terence Tao didn't discover or achieve anything substantial before the age of 20. Some child wizards grow up to become actual figures, just like other "norma" people. The fact that they were maths prodigies doesn't influence that much when it comes to actual achievements. There are plenty of examples of people who were nowhere near prodigies as children and ended up achieving substantial and wonderful work in mathematics (Smale comes to mind, Serre too). Pretty much it all comes down to how you spend your time in your 20s.

How many of these child prodigies do you think there are? To start working on things like calculus involves the parents side-stepping the structured school curriculum. And most parents would think moving their kid up grades randomly would be bad for their social skills. I was tested at a 170+ IQ as a kid and my parents were offered to move me from 3rd grade to 7th grade. They decided to only move me up one grade. In college for chemical engineering I performed the best on classwork without studying, but my gpa was steadily around a 3.0-3.3 because of that. Overall not caring and having to deal with school politics drama I decided to join the military for a certain number of years then decide whether or not to go back. Thing is with success within the system is you need to be a certain level of retarded to never go/think/act outside of the box and sit there doing school programs like a robot for hours on end. Past a certain IQ like 120 in school any higher does not matter (especially in university) and is completely about conscientiousness.

Theoretical mathematics is a waste of time. Physics could be cool. Overall the goal should be getting into secret military research. That is where the interesting stuff is at. Doing endless mathematics with no point is a hole to dig yourself into with the end being a limited income from a university while having not benefited anything while your calculations lay hidden and may be never used again. Most of the interesting areas of research are at a point where such being public knowledge would be dangerous for society such as being able to explode the sun with a certain kind of rigged rocketry -- or too efficient sources of energy (and thusly could be used for explosions; terrorism). Research at a university will always be limited to an in-the-box pigeon holed scenario.

I keep seeing more and more child prodigies these days, I wonder how many of them are scams... it wouldn't be too hard to get a kid to write some stuff on a board and read off a script.
Not that I want that to be true, if this kid really is that much of a genius, I'm happy for him, I hope he has a nice long career in math.

Anyway, one recurrent problem with child prodigies is they often suffer depression because their IQ levels off to match their peers as they age, and then they're just another one of the crowd. This isn't a bad thing at all, but I imagine it stings when you were so lauded as a kid. Mozart for example was deeply depressed as an adult.

here's the thing OP
this kid never worked a hard day in his LIFE. he's never seen true adversity, this is the only life he knows. he will never be able to truly, objectively appreciate his talent

I'm not trying to shit on him. I'm happy someone can live such an existence

But I'm 24 years old. I went to community college for fucking 5 years (numerous fuck ups, failed pre-algebra 7 times) and I'm just now starting a compsci program online. For years I worked shit jobs, scraping black shit off the floor in freezers with an old spatula, wiping piss and shit off of toilet rims in gas stations, being broken up with and kicked out of my house and sleeping in my beat down car covered in cigarette ash and weed crumbs. Years and years of drinking until 8am in my room, pissing myself

When I was 23 and I finally it clicked, and finally I started to understand math for the first time, I broke down in tears (not to be a fag) at how proud I was of my work. And for the past few months, as i learn more math, as i got my shit together and it all started to click to me, and it all started to make sense, learning how important academics are, nothing in the world can top that beauty.

Now I do linear algebra and number theory, physics, etc.. and every little breakthrough I make sends chills down my spine at how beautiful it is to apply yourself, and to come from nothing and be something. Sure it would've been easier to have been born a genius, but I know what it's like to be as dumb as fucking dirt and degenerate trash too. The only thing I used to think about is how i was going to get more money for weed. I've come a long way and while I'm not proud of who I was, I'm proud of where I am now, and this little smug kid will never experience that.

This. In my honest opinion the government should institute a program for all genetic undesirables (low IQ, ugly, other deficiencies) to have a big orgy with young beautiful women and euthanized immediately after that. All free of charge and with the consent of the person being euthanized, of course. This and a program to promote families and childbirths could really have a good effect on society.

True, when I manage to get a glimpse of advanced concept, it's like a world beyond wonder. Those moments are rare but life was worth it just for them.

I'm not gonna quote everyone in this thread, but this shit is super cringe. If you like science, stop worrying about your intelligence and pic up a textbook or journal and start reading. If you don't like science, then why are you so worried about it? If you're average intelligence and genuinely motivated, then there is a lot you can achieve, and you don't have to be a """genius""" to make a meaningful contribution to science. If you don't live in some flyover state or a third world country, then there's probably a university somewhere within an hour or two of where you live where literally dozens of people like this kids work and study. Scientific ability is not some mythical fucking ability that is beyond the reach of mere mortal. Yeah some people have WAY more natural talent than other, motivation and effort will take you 80% of the way.

SJG's point was not that le racist white men have been oppressing dindus since the dawn of time. That's certainly a part of it, but I think his point was a little broader than that. It seems like he was probably making the point that sociocultural factors, ones developmental environment, and even mere chance can conspire to create or destroy a great genius. Even within the sciences themselves, there have probably been dozen of biologists, for example, who would have been groundbreaking mathematicians and vice versa.
