/sci/entists i gave my class presentation on trolling and when my class went from rage to a silence of questioning right from wrong i knew i had done something that makes trolls seem like good people.

To that room we are now internet superheroes, we make the internet a place where people do not do stupid things, attack and belittle one another, not a place for terrorists to plot. We go in and kick ass as vigilantes

In my prof's words, "Explore the idea of the troll being a socializing officer or the internet police; acting on behalf of justice you may wish to compare "sound rules" of the real world and vice versa. Do mods follow site rules or real life rules or blend? Try to show more sympathy for the victims of trolling in your final paper as your presentation was heartless and from the perspective of a troll.

or to be more accurate, the consequences of behavior on the internet has less of an impact. If people talked to each other on a daily basis the way we talk to each other on the net, life would be hellish. We can tolerate these things on the net because it always comes through the filter or a computer, dehumanizing the behavior and removing most of the vitriol that a real person saying mean things would have.

The internet has looser standers for conduct and etiquette because it is so impersonal. Trolling is almost passive aggressive, it is an attempt to illicit strong responses in a heavily desensitized environment. Thus a troll must be knowledgeable enough about a community to properly elicit desired responses. They ground a community on the net by establishing the particular boundaries and beliefs of that community by constantly challenging and/or reinforcing said boundaries.

So trolls are more like internet priests than policemen. They don't force anyone's behavior. They define the mores of an internet community. This would also explain the occasional witch hunts led by trolls.

4chan is a good example of what an irrational brain has to wade through to find sanity and clarity. It is no wonder it took eons to form evolution into a quasi-coherent state.

Discuss how, as one person put it, trolls are like a "Russian Roulette Death Star," where all sorts of acts can go on and even be encouraged, but, occasionally, one will simply be picked up on and completely DEMOLISHED (like Kenny Glenn, the cat abuser).

>> No.1142400

its obvious trolls are just the subconcious of individuals. The only thing keeping them from being evident in reality day to day is social mores and consequences.

There is nothing special about any given troll at any given moment.

thats not so much a result of trolls in general and more of an issue for 4chan and other troll hangouts.

When you have people that are predisposed to push the boundaries of local norms (trolls), and have them congregate in their own community (chans). then you have this paradox, in that you have this community whose only unifying trait is the desire to push the bounds of acceptable behavior. How could such a community establish its own rules?

Its an internet game of chicken with a thousand participants, who will break the troll facade first and actually CARE about the subject under discussion? This is when the troll logic becomes convoluted and there you get reverse-trolling, concern-trolling, people trolling the groups they self identify with. In short, trolls trolling trolls.

An entire community of fakers ceases to be able to understand when someone is faking and not faking, predictability of the behavior of others breaks down. And then things get really interesting, because once this conclusion is reached the consensus is that you can do ANYTHING and it will simultaneously be seriously dismissed, jokingly dismissed, seriously endorsed, and jokingly endorsed. All at the same time.

This means that the liklihood of the community taking any course of action is roughly equal in all instances. Its a dice roll. Will they turn in the pedophile, or trade stories about child rape? Will they terroize the kid who hurt the cat, or will the post photos of gore? You can never know and neither do they.

Its a chaotic system whereby the outcome is determined by the randoms whims and fancies of hundreds of independent actors working on the assumed behavior of all the other independent actors. Sometimes they cancel each other out, and sometimes they steamroll over their victim. As a system they have not inherent morals, just predispositions for doing whatever is most entertaining at the time.

Trolls are a delusion. They only manifest in the minds eye. One chooses or doesn't choose to identify trolls based on their own inherent biases.

It's Poe's Law.
