Apparently it's written by "Stephen Cave", never heard of this "smartest man ever lived". The article also makes the retarded inference from the Libet experiments that our conscious thoughts play no role in our decisions - just because they were able to predict with better than random accuracy a trivial decision of when to press a button before the subject of the experiments was aware of having made up their mind.

Just think about how ridiculous this reasoning is. How many believers in free will deny that our subconscious does influence our decisions? How is this news to anyone? And is it surprising that conscious deliberation doesn't play much role in a decision that doesn't matter, like when to press a button in a test like this? It's an absurd leap to conclude our conscious thoughts do nothing in general. And just think about how much of an extraordinary claim that is - our brain has constructed this elaborate conspiracy that make it seem our conscious thoughts are in control of our actions when in fact they serve no purpose at all. From an evolutionary point of view this is an incredible waste. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and in this case the evidence is very flimsy.

because your choice was dictated by a number of things. the idea of free will is really weird honestly, we are robots bound by laws and forces beyond our understanding. we do our best in the midst of them

Free will is i going to track down everyone who ever hurt me caus it was his/her choice right?

god forbid, are you really suggesting THINGS - such as our thoughts and feelings - dictate our choices? Fuck, then we really can't be free because freedom is clearly about acting randomly without any cause whatsoever.

Second post was made by someone posting from Mars. 4chan corrects for the latency after arrival but not before a post that arrived earlier got posted. If Hiromoot disabled this mechanism it would open the door to temporal paradoxes, imploding the universe.

i know you posted this unironically, but that's actually true. if you understand cause and effect along with actions and consequences, you are bound by them.

I am not so much "bound by them" but made up of them. I am not being pushed around by the universe, but rather me and my will are a part of it. Beyond those causes and effects, there's no "me" to be coerced.

You sit on a spec of dust in a entropic universe of disorder. If free will derives order against said chaotic system in the comparitive aggregate then yes it exists.
