11378344 No.11378344 [Reply] [Original]

Tl:dr: Why are science profs so based and arts profs so toxic?

I decided to incorporate English into my science degree as a minor for a couple of reasons. One, to broaden my range of knowledge and challenge myself. Two, I'm writing a novel so I thought it would be useful.

My prof seemed cool at first and then she started grading my work. Two formal papers on readings we did in class came back: B-, and C+. I let it go and more and more shit kept happening with poor marks. Also every single time I submitted something, it was proofread by a friend of mine with a masters in English and is a published author.

I spoke to my bio prof and I told him the story. His only response was "Run. Get out of the arts."

Well, today I did that.

Why are science majors so based and arts students schizos? Is it the objective scientific method training, or maybe a denser frontal lobe?

I say we kick them all out and make room for more science stuff.

yeah, I'd say. I'm just going to continue on with science then. It's really sad that this political shit has penetrated the universities so deeply.

I was talking to a non-tenured English academic recently and they said that the interpersonal conflicts between Arts faculty is astounding. It's so bad that no new PhD wants to come here to teach Arts or anything similar. They eat their own man. It's scary to think about how they're shaping a large part of our future by force feeding their ideologies to students.

The only courses I took in dedicated arts were for undergraduate core studies and they weren't very difficult. You just need to know how to effectively communicate thoughts which is pretty important in any field but it's more direct in English courses so it makes sense why that would be difficult for you. I've written several psychology proposals and I'm sure, like psychology, there's boards you will have to submit work to that concise and meaningful communication will be all but necessary.

In the short term, why not simply ask the professor how you can improve if she doesn't give feedback upon release of your assignments?

My first subject was on reviewing literature in 1100-1300 C.E. medicine and it's relevant application to real world physical assessments.

2nd subject was on some bullshit feminist propaganda we read in class about how men oppress women in the patriarchy, steal their glory and ideas while they continue to gain more notoriety. This subject was unique to me and I only completed it because people were telling me to "just play the game."

Also my writing isn't perfect I'll admit, but it's better than most others in my cohort. Spending 10h on a paper with no measurable mistakes suggests that as well. Their marking is entirely subjective and at no point is there a correction on: formatting, grammar, sentence structure, or flow.

Were they aware of the specific assignment? Often there will be very specific requests. They also weren't part of the lectures on the material, so don't know what themes and perspectives are being analyzed.

Just because you have good grammar and punctuation doesn't mean you get an A. Also your prof friend isn't going to sit with you and do editing until you have A-worthy material. He probably said it's good enough, which it was, because you passed.

I obviously didn't just hand over my assignment and demand a review from another prof. We sat down, had a conversation, and I explained my situation and answered any questions they had. My grammar obviously wasn't the problem and I'm aware you can write a grammatically perfect essay with internal inconsistencies. What the prof did was read over the paper and say the majority of stuff marked wrong isn't true.

I also have other assignments that were handed back with ZERO comments or indications of anything being wrong. I check the score on the back of the sheet and its an 8/10.

The main difference is that in STEM you are either objectively correct or objectively wrong. The professor can't really screw you over even if they're a cunt.

>The professor can't really screw you over even if they're a cunt.
A professor can always corner you if he wants to, unless you're a literal genius that not only knows the subject like gospel, but also remembers each and every single word he said during all lectures. Also, those questions where it's not a matter of knowing the answer, which might be trivial, but a matter of understanding what the professor wants to know. I've seen all of this happen too many times.

I've had experience of various kinds of professors:
>mathematicians
They live in their world, they speak an alien language, they overcomplicate stuff. They know too much to be able to explain it well.
>Physicists
Chaotic individuals that can't organize themselves and their lectures to save their lives. Other than this they're good at teaching.
>Chemists
People that barely know to be alive. They seem to be in a constant state of confusion. Boring lectures, but the most indulging when giving grades.
>engineers
Best at teaching, but sometimes they dumb down things a bit too much and you have to work extra because you miss informations. Despite this, they have their feet on the ground. They don't allow mistakes.

After dealing with artsy people, I must say that compared to the types of STEM professors above what they lack is the feet-on-the-ground attitude, and the ability to follow even the most elementary logic. I must assume their professors must be even worse than them.

depends on the subject and teacher. most of those intro classes that people take for electives or breadth are purposefully staffed by the most incompetent that the department has to offer, because they aren't good enough to teach the harder classes and they'd rather the actually good teachers teach the harder and more interesting classes. The only humanities class I liked as a STEM major was an honors Negotiation course. Being an Honors course meant we got a professor who wasn't a complete brainlet, and being Negotiation there was actually a logical and rational aspect to it. When it came to the topic of gender in negotiation, as a class we could actually approach it objectively, and look at the figures and accept them as they are without going ape about things irrelevant to the class. one of my favorite professors.

This is not good academic writing at all, the purpose of these assignments is to learn the tone and technical skills of authoritative academic writing.

What does it mean to be fluent in the parameters, potential complications (comma before the and), and impacts of mental health?
How are women better at identifying symptoms of mental illness?
These points could have been entire essays in and of themselves

>The issue . . . American statistics
This is a totally incoherent sentence

You didn't even really make any citations, you just tried to vaguely summarize this study rather than directly cite its data and analyze it in your own words

This whole passage says a whole lot of nothing, if you aren't going to actually dig into a study you shouldn't even bring it up at all. The whole passage might as well say
>Men and women experience mental illness differently in our society

Obama deliberately used race as a wedge issue. He knows black fear is a powerful political tool for his party. He got on a podium and made the Trayvon Martin case a thing, and then ran with that, spawning the BLM movement and causing race riots all over the country. Eventually that culminated with a cop killer rampaging around Dallas, something he doesn't get "credit" for like Trump gets "credit" for any kind of aberrant behavior demonstrated by radicals during this time period.

What does that even mean? He said that it was being subjectively destroyed when it was objectively remarkable. The whole point of grading is to have an unbiased approach to standardize the level of competency within each student. If its just because you don't like the subjective points (i.e. it doesn't appeal to you) then you shouldn't take away acknowledgment of the logic of the argument. That's what the grading points are: Thesis, Arguments, Format, Grammar, Punctuation. If you deviate from that, you're letting your emotions write for you which produces an inaccurate view of the student's capabilities.

Might as well post this here. I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree and could tell you dozens of horror stories about the professors I had to deal with. Yes, I should have gone for a different major, unfortunately the praise and scholarships I received for my talent in art boosted my ego and I fell for the liberal arts trap.

My artwork is inspired by science and my paintings are heavily detailed and realistically styled. In the contemporary art world, these aspects add little social value to a piece and brought me more negative feedback than praise. In fact, when a professor would discover that me, a straight white male, created a piece that drew praise from my classmates, they would be taken aback.

One particularly egregious example would be from my freshman year. We had an anonymous class critique for a project and were to rank them from best to worst by placing them on 4 shelves. The best on top, the worst at the bottom. My piece was unanimously chosen to go on the top shelf and everyone, including the professor, adored it. Once we went around the room to see who did which piece,my professor suddenly had a change of heart. He realized said my piece was too shallow and lacked meaning. He picked mine up and placed it on the second to last shelf.

My classmates argued with him but his mind was made up. I learned fighting with these professors just caused more harm to my grades. In the end, I gave up the gallery scene and found success in illustration and mural work. Contrary to popular belief, money can be made in the arts because normal people appreciate skill and results over identity.

Sadly, the liberal arts professors these days are the ones who graduated and never found financial success in their field. They go back for their masters and return to teach at universities, causing a cyclical destruction of the liberal arts. The students they praised the most from my classes, are now either art teachers or mothers who don't work.

Yes. It was absurd. We would have weekly critiques like this in all of my classes and they would be 2-3 hours long. Never did we learn difficult techniques about how to better paint or sculpt. There were occasional research papers and gallery events we learned how to coordinate, but other than that I essentially earned a degree that says I can paint real good.

If it wasn't for the scholarship money I would have never stayed till the end. The alumni magazine did do a feature on me though after I graduated which helped me land a few major contracts, but other than that there was very little value from my degree.

OP, two reasons you got marked down. First, you didn't suck up enough. You should have pretended to be hopeless and in dire need of her masterful wisdom. Secondly, and much more importantly, you didn't politicize your writing to suit her left wing agenda. If you had somewhere in your essays criticized the patriarchy, capitalism, or white people, your grades would have been much higher, regardless of factual content and writing quality.

I soon learned this after having a similar experience to yours. So I merely played along with their game and wrote what I knew what they wanted to hear. They are stupid arseholes and will lap up anything with a left wing bias.

Had a friend doing same course in final year. He didn't believe me when I told him this. So to prove it I took his essay and rewrote it for him with a political bias. I changed nothing else. He went from a "Fail: Resubmit" to a "B+". When he received the new result he was absolutely dumbfounded. This was a real eye opener for him about how the academic Arts works. They have no integrity, no intellectual honesty, just an agenda.
