I know a guy who was high on heroin and long story short, lost his arms. This was at least 45 years ago. It has nothing to do with prescriptions, opioid epedemics have always, always, had to do with availability, and they always come in waves.

Way back in the 20's there was a big thing where parts of the Sicilian mafia didn't want to get into drugs, but others did. Later the opium came from China after the British flooded them with it for their government to subdue their population.
