i think a lot of people subscribe to the "blank slate" idea - that everyone is born with something like a blank slate of a brain and your intelligence and just about everything about your cognition is entirely dependent on your upbringing/environment. i used to subscribe to that idea when i didn't know any better. if you've ever seen a discussion on intelligence and IQ on reddit, you'll see plenty of people just refuse to believe there's any genetic component to it. people obviously don't want to hear that you may never be able to be the best at something, even if you try your hardest.

You need a certain degree of talent to be a great mathematician, but hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. The problem is even the smartest people have to struggle. All the people that are brilliant at math were smart to begin with, yes, but they also worked their asses off.

I had this eugenicist worldview and it almost caused me to fail out of my math degree because I thought everyone was a genius such that everything came naturally to them. Not true.
