I'm not super knowledgeable on the subject, but I figure that it could work. The hardest part technically is to figure out how to turn a bunch of small space telescopes orbiting Earth into one large one. It's not impossible and a competent team could do it faster than JWST, but the more significant issue is management. Most spaceflight projects are very risk adverse with new technology and it would take alot of time to convince most space telescope builders to make it.

A few points.

Money equals results. At some point time will pass and we'll be past a development period and the SLS program will start to show results, albeit poor results for the expenditures, but that is not obvious as one has to contemplate and be able to contemplate a different non existent picture. Which flows into the following point of what results will engender. But first, the SLS program is also the beneficiary of the future post ISS era where even more expenditure is roped around giving it results and glorifying it.

It will be preferentially given work as the rigged centerpiece of the national space program. This is designed to afford it glory to rope in adulation and fan adulation, for the benefit of that adulation to its receivers and the continuation of the program, to the expense of anything else that could be done.

Starship is certainly something else that will garner a lot of limelight SLS alone would have received from that, however.

Sometimes you'll read a post that misses the point, like they dont care whether SLS exists they want to consume and get rich off the development period. SLS is and was a long con, not just a short one. A self rationalizing program that occupies what the space program does and becomes about for a century and so enriches the same construct who benefited from the space shuttle years as that was being disrupted.

Yes, another thing. SLS is a certain of amount of yearly rigged production, which they can then compete "free" against any alternative to the max capped NASA demand, which is constricted to about what the production rate is, and they can and want to expand that production rate variable in the future in say that larger post ISS timeframe, where the footprint of the ISS budget unlocks to be spent elsewhere, ie focused on expanding the SLS program.
