cheating makes no sense at all if this is not the case. the only reason people cheat then is to make others think they are smart when they in fact are not. the sad part is that most people that cheat in games actually feel as though they have won.

Look at it this way.

A brilliant chess player and a brilliant programmer are preparing for a chess match.

The chess player prepares some strategies and whatever. He doesn't need to worry; he has what it takes to play chess in real time.

The programmer isn't that good at chess. He decides he'd rather devise some algorithms to help him out.

Both are smart enough to use what they have to win. However only one of them is good at chess.
