I downloaded all three parts of the work by Planck where this quote is supposed to source from ("Where is Science Going?", "The Universe in Light of Modern Physics", and "The Philosophy of Physics") and it appears nowhere in any of them.

Sorry OP but the quote is probably bullshit

>> No.11277570

>>11277563
Interesting you have read them all? I did not know where this quote supposedly comes from if I do 10 minutes of digging will I come back here and call you a retarded faggot for posting some dumb shit?

>> No.11277582

>>11277570
The top 'quote site' result cites it from a work called The New Science, which is made of those three essays. None of those contain the quote.

Another site claims that it's from a 1944 speech called "Das Wesen der Materie" (The Nature of Matter) but it seems impossible to find a transcript online anywhere. Most likely apocryphal.

>> No.11277585

>>11277582
or it could be misatributed

>> No.11277611

>>11277585
That's also possible. The speech "Das wesen der Materie" does appear to exist, but it is only available at an obscure German archive library.

If you look at all of the works on Google Scholar that actually cite this speech, it's a bunch of crazy woo published in fraudulent 'open access' journals

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?cites=16672085859606442262&as_sdt=805&sciodt=0,3&hl=en

My guess is that this quote is fictitious and someone, somewhere down the line made a fraudulent citation. Nobody dug through a German archive to find this shit, and if they did, a real honest transcript would be available somewhere.

wikipedia used that quote and cited it here but I guess you've already checked that.
Das Wesen der Materie [The Nature of Matter], speech at Florence, Italy (1944) (from Archiv zur Geschichte der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Abt. Va, Rep. 11 Planck, Nr. 1797)

>> No.11277649

>>11277631
Their online digital catalog doesn't show any work with that title from 1944

http://swb.bsz-bw.de/DB=2.363/SET=1/TTL=1/CMD?SGE=&ACT=SRCHM&MATCFILTER=Y&MATCSET=Y&NOSCAN=Y&PARSE_MNEMONICS=N&PARSE_OPWORDS=N&PARSE_OLDSETS=N&IMPLAND=Y&NOABS=Y&ACT0=SRCHA&IKT0=2088&TRM0=Planck&ACT1=*&IKT1=4&TRM1=&ACT2=*&IKT2=2072&TRM2=&ACT3=*&IKT3=2100&TRM3=&ADI_JVU=1944&ADI_LND=&ADI_TAA=&SRT=RLV&ADI_MAT=B&ADI_MAT=T&ADI_MAT=A&ADI_MAT=V&ADI_MAT=O&ADI_MAT=S&ADI_MAT=E&ADI_MAT=W&ADI_MAT=H

Of course it's 100% possible that it's never been digitized, but it makes it that much more far-fetched that all these American authors are correctly citing this speech without paying a visit to this archive.

my german is very poor but one could try searching the back translation?
so I google translated the forst line which threw up a bunch of results referencing one of his last speeches at florence but many seem to be hippy new age-er sites
so it might be a more complex result, it'd help if a sourkraut speaker were around

>> No.11277691

>>11277682
I have a German translation of it from a Youtube video that pops up a couple of secondary results on Google if that helps.

I don't know if this is the true back translation though - it is fully possible that it's a German translation of the English quote.

unfortunately it's probably at a dead end - the quote could be real and only found in an obscure speech archived in Germany, or it could be fake and someone fabricated a citation

we won't know unless some deutscheranon decides to pay the Max Planck archives a visit and pull out the transcript

>are the transcripts not publicly available?

Nope. It dates back to 1944 so it would have had to be transcribed by a librarian or archivist and there are limits to how much stuff they can pull.

I specifically found PDFs that worked well with my OCR, and I tested multiple keywords from the quote to rule out errors. It's not in any of those three works.

If the quote exists, it's definitely from that 1944 speech since it's not in The New Science.

No obviously not. The objective was to verify whether the quote was sourced from that material, not to read about the things Max Planck wrote in that work.

I never claimed that I read those three essays - just that I downloaded them and verified that the quote doesn't come from any of them.

Kraut anon here. I've checked the archive and this exact entry (Abt. Va, Rep. 11) is sadly missing. Kind of strange that documents on Planck are missing, given that it is literally the Max Planck society's archive.
