hypothetical scenario. you have a math degree. you can either go to law school and be a lawyer or go get a masters in CS and be a code monkey. which do you choose in 2019

Get a masters in CS. The future is gonna be ruled by coders lol. Law school is also very stressful, and requires skills such as being able to communicate with others and being sociable.

>>11270519
ok. but now here is the problem
because, in this hypothetical scenario, you have a math degree, rather than a cs degree, your lack of cs coursework means you can only get into shit cs masters programs.

the program into which you have been admitted is ranked #70. you will have to pay for it. do you still go?

>>11270525

Okay, thank you for providing more background. I'd still do it, I have a cousin who did a masters in CS (might've even been something weaker like cybersecurity) at a #169 ranked school for CS, and he has a well paying job. Just having a masters in cs, regardless of uni, probably shows employers you're very intelligent. Also, if you did your math major at a good uni then catching up on the cs coursework (operating systems, algorithms, data structures) would be easy. Math classes such as real analysis and abstract algebra are more difficult than the cs courses I listed. I'd do it, assuming you're a smart math major and went to a decent uni. Also, which difficult math classes did you take?

>> No.11270565

>>11270537
ok, thank you for this info.
i did all the proof stuff, basically two semesters of abstract algebra and a semester of analysis.

my thinking is that the ranking of a cs grad program really doesn't matter for a masters, since its all the same coursework essentially anywhere; it seems to matter more for a phd

See if you can get a job just with your math degree.

I know you're gonna say you don't know how to code, but that didn't stop some of my brain dead peers from getting jobs working on software.

market for lower tier programmers is much better than lower tier lawyers right now
the only downside to code monkey is uncertainty of the job market. right now may not be indicative of how it will be in 4 years

>>11270565
cs masters is kind of a meme right now. a lot of people just use it to change careers, enter the country, or buy time to get a better internship or a job

I would probably slowly OD on heroin or drink myself to death if I was faced with the choice of being a CSNigger or a Lawfag parasite. If you have to pick I suppose CSfagging is less degrading to your soul by a small amount.

i agree but my only other options are

-math academia
-philosophy academia
-musicology academia

don't want to do 1. could get into 2 and 3 (i'm doing another major/minor in those areas) but i don't want to have to move to kansas or something to be a professor at a LAC (no offense to kansas people but i'm just not from there and the academia market is awful)

>>11270575
on the cs masters meme thing. that's what i was worried about. i noticed stem masters programs seem to be full of international kids, maybe some are doing it to extend visas or something (no offense to them, just what I've observed)

apparently i was supposed to start applying to cs jobs in august of 2019 to start in august of 2020

code monkey would be money, but I could make some real progress as a lawyer...

well, that's one of my other big things.

if i do the masters, i'd try to get a phd too, so that i could do some higher level development stuff in industry. For example, in data science, or ML or AI. So as to have a career progression.

does that kind of stuff really exist or is it all "program where buttons go"?

>maybe some are doing it to extend visas
some of them do. others did their undergrad here with the sole intention of moving here.
if you believe the /pol/tards there's a bunch of chinese spies in the mix as well

bachelors and masters go into the same application pool. i don't many people with an ms so can't tell you what it's like, but it seems there are more people who didn't do CS that are trying to just pivot

you probably should. google stops accepting resumes around like october

my current theory is that once the bubble bursts a lot of programmers are gonna go back to grad school to flood the data science or ML market
as a new grad programmer i'm kinda nervous about the industry. things seem to be slowing down and losing my job would kinda suck

>does that kind of stuff really exist or is it all "program where buttons go"?
of course ML exists in industry, but sometimes the you can just find a much better paying/more stable crud job

the whole thing is going to collapse when people realize AI is a meme. That should be good for the talented few and disastrous economically for people who have invested far too much into tech.

iirc even the FAANG teams are downsizing. too many cooks afaik.
AI doesn't seem to be a meme though. seems to have tangible results in production.

see every boomer's 401k, or most institutional investors

>> No.11270746

As a guy who worked at a ML startup, it's a meme. There is some solid stuff out there, but it's way too easy to just throw data at an "ensemble" see what sticks and sell it.

Thinking about it now, a masters might not have so much financial value. It seems like the market is flooded with a bunch of internationals with masters in CS/Stats/Math. Honestly, I'd do the math phd. At the end you'd be more employable than anybody else, but a math phd is a fuckton of work and highly nontrivial.
