that would make sense if health care wasn't at all subsided or paid for completely (depending on country) through other people's tax dollars. perhaps big tobacco should be footed the bill and we'll see how much money they'd make then.

You know idk, we made seatbelts mandatory, carseats mandatory for like 8 years while codes change every 3, drinking a beer at work lunch a fireable offense, England made kitchen knives illegal.

Honestly I'm just waiting for the day we have to wear elbow pads and a helmet when we go out.
Ha, wouldn't it be convenient if we could install little printers on your car dash and the state can print you a ticket if your car camera or accelerometer catches you doing anything naughty.

Good call OP. Let's just intervene in everyone's lives. They'll thank us when they safely arrive to the grave.

desu i'd be fine with smoking if it was just a matter of personal health and didn't impact innocent bystanders. but second hand smoke is a thing, healthcare is either subsidized in part or paid completely through taxes, and the environmental impact of both manufacturing and smoking releasing co2.

except it's not. smoke disperses and effects everyone around them. those carcinogens don't just magically disappear after being inhaled. some are absorbed by the smokers but the rest go with the smoke and inhaled by those around them.

The only time second hand smoke is a legit problem is in enclosed spaces such as cars and buildings and, more importantly, over extended periods of time. Unless you are giving them mouth to mouth as they are smoking, you are taking negligible amounts of carcinogens and you take in just as many if not more when you burn your popcorn in the microwave and filled your shitty 1 bedroom apartment with all kinds of radical and ionized carbon derivatives.
I bet you are one of those retards that gets butthurt when they see someone smoking a cigarette and tells them they are killing everyone around them while smoking a nice fat joint.

Insignificant , not nearly as unnecessary as the ones you'll emit by your worthless existence.

Because its B I G business. For places like virginia and north carolina its a big part of the economy.
People buying cigarettes are also paying a lot of taxes on it.
There are fewer people than ever smoking these days so education and restricting where you can smoke is more effective than prohibition which never works.

all else equal a smoker emits more co2 than a non-smoker. you cannot deny this. and it's not insignificant.
https://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/93/12/15-152744/en/
>Tobacco smoking leads directly to the emission of 2 600 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and about 5 200 000 tonnes of methane.19 Data from 66 low- and middle-income countries showed that tobacco growing and curing caused significant deforestation between 1990 and 1995, amounting to approximately 2000 hectares – on average, 5% of each country’s estimated deforestation during that five-year period.20 Worldwide, approximately 13 000 000 hectares of forest are lost due to agriculture or natural causes each year,21 and of this, at least 200 000 hectares are for tobacco agriculture and curing.1 Deforestation is the second largest anthropogenic source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere (approximately 20%), after fossil fuel combustion.22 One estimate of the impact of deforestation in tobacco agriculture and curing is that it causes almost 5% of global greenhouse gas production.23

that are quickly lost with the healthcare costs of treating smokers. the cost of smoking far outweighs whatever tax revenue.

Yes but cigarette taxes pay for a third of the cost of the National Health service. We're saving many more lives than we otherwise could, because of those smokers who voluntary lay down their lives for their friends. Smokers are national benefactors.

Yes this is correct. But unless they are blowing it directly in your face the amount you are inhaling is completely negligible. Even if they are blowing it in your face the amount you take in is almost negligible.
You get more carcinogens just walking around town for a bit than you do from second hand smoke outside. Ever had a camp fire? You've probably taken in more 'second hand' smoke and carcinogens from one campfire than all sources of tobacco in your entire life.

Smokers are actually less of a burden on the healthcare system than the obese, since smoking kills earlier while stuffing yourself usually won't kill you but will make you very sick and therefore you end up needing more medicine than the smoker who died of terminal lung cancer. I think it's great, it culls those stupid enough to hand over their money to corporations so they can slowly poison and kill them.
