So anyone have any estimations on how bad the damage will be, seeing as how the Exxon Valdeez caused problems many many years after the spill, and this thing is nearly double it and all over our fucking coast.

No, It can not happen. While it is possible that burning the oil can happen at the surface near the point that the oil is escaping, this is mainly due to the methane gas that is mixed in with the crude. Once the oil is dispersed across the surface of the ocean, it is not volatile enough to maintain combustion. The wind and rain of a hurricane or waterspout would easily extinguish any flames.

What is more scary is the thought of the winds of a hurricane driving that oil slick ashore along with a storm surge. That would really coat the shore line and any buildings/houses that the storm surge could reach.

Warmer climate, more sun, means the oil on the surface will break down fairly quickly (a few years max)

The submerged oil would be a problem, except you've got the gulf loop current that'll pump it into the atlantic pretty fast.

In short, it's not going to be anything in 5-10 years time, and will be pretty minor in a couple of years tops.

as for the question the Valdeez still hasn't truly been cleaned up, you can still find shores oozing with crude, this however if gone unchecked will be worse I would think.

This one is going to suck enormous dick to mitigate, more dick than the spammers who spam the /sci/ducks =/

also unlike exxon this oil hasn't been refined in any way.

despite the high volume, much of it is just mud and gases.

Best discussion of the topic that I've seen.

It's a fuckton more oil than the Valdez, and the consensus seems to be that the flow rates are significantly higher than BP's "estimates".
