That's a cuntshit of a definition. Here's a better one: Like medical or legal professionals, professional engineers are licensed, and are accountable for their work. Their duty is to serve and protect the public welfare where engineering is concerned. Professional engineers subscribe to a strict code of ethics and practice standards, with legal implications.

There's practical experience engineers have that people locked away in labs and their mother's basement will rarely show. It's more than just technical knowledge.

I had a diploma of college studies in computer science (i.e. that kind of 3yrs post-high school diploma is unique to quebec, think of it as a "lesser bachelor"). I worked as an IT technician while studying and a call center agent during summers. Then I did one internship (programmer analyst) at the end of the diploma and worked as a telecom technician (was bored, wanted to be on the field) for some time.

Then I entered university in software engineering, did an internship coding Java embedded shit. I got bored, switched to electrical engineering, did one internship for a large power company, and switched a year later again to automated production engineering(i.e. a generalist degree in industrial and mechanical engineering). Did two internships, working on implementing embedded system solutions on a pipeline network. I eventually went back to EE, did two international internships in Europe that time and when I practically had the degree, I switched to computer engineering. Since I had some software and electrical engineering classes, I only needed 2-3 more classes to get that degree

Then I started being bored again and finally decided that I wanted to be on the field and not fuck in an office. I did 4 more classes and they basically gave me a "generalist" degree with a "HOLY JESUS THIS MAN IS INSANE" mention since I had a fuckton of credits and internships.

Then I felt like going in aerospace engineering for shit 'n giggles, sent my resume randomly to various places saying I wanted some sort of field job and some god tier aerospace company called back. I'm doing an internship there now for my master's degree and I test missiles.

Feels good man.

ITT: Engineers forget that they don't know how to weld, swing a hammer, pour concrete, or machine a part.

You guys are the middlemen of the engine of progress.

Tradesmen: the ones who ACTUALLY do the work.

You never said that, did you. All you said is: I don't think a scientist can do my job, therefore, a scientist can't do my job. The only way it would take a whole team of scientists is if the project were vast, like say, building a whole airplane. Subparts, like what you may do, are trivial.

...Well I do not work alone for obvious reasons (time, efficiency..)

But yes, I theoretically could. As I said before, I started working in this field recently so I haven't "built" an actual airplane just yet. But I did design/build two prototypes; one as a final project for my specialization in Aerospace, and another one in my free time.

Crazy engineer reporting in again

Defense engineering jobs/internships are a nice professionnal experience and look awesome on your resume, but morally speaking I feel like we're just wasting a ridiculous ammount of taxpayers' money doing shit that probably will never actually do anything other than blow up 3rd world countries. Also, we're basically just doing R&D and live on investors/gov money. Most "serious" employee (i.e. ppl who did all their career here and plan to stay here forever) here are in it for the money and don't give a shit about anything. I feel like I'm some sort of mercenary.

I loved the internship, but I'm GTFO'ing and never looking back once I'm done.

No, you didn't.

You have only learned a basic outline of the tools used.

I'm a defense engineer. I do landmines and explosives survivability research for the Canadian DOD and DRDC at their Protection and Neutralization Lab at CFB Suffield / DRDC Suffield. Canada is a signatory of the Ottawa Convention - no landmine anybody sees out there is deployed by us. My research is exclusively in regards to saving lives. And the impact isn't just on the Canadian Forces / NATO / other allies, but has direct and real consequences for civilian humanitarian organizations de-mining Cambodia, northern Africa, and so on.

Not everybody who works in this industry works on killing Arabs. I feel fantastic about my job.

This.

You learned: "Welding is for putting metal things together", "Hammers are for driving nails", and "Machining is what you do when you need a piece of metal cut just right".
Kind of like how I learned "The periodic table lists chemicals".

Understanding the basic principle of a thing does not imply that you are qualified to use it, much less use it properly. Without the people who can make the things you design, you're about as useful as a bicycle is in the middle of the ocean.

I'm seeing the picture here, it's pointless discussing with someone playing with semantics and sophisms to validate his claims.

I said I theoretically could because I probably never will build a goddamn air-o-plane by myself. What kind of company would monopolize ressources and ask an Engineer to do that? I'm just saying I have the qualifications required to do it, as I built two fully functional prototypes and it would simply be a matter of time/ressources to go full-scale.

>>1125935
Yeah I see what you mean. But like you said, it looks good on a resume though, and it looks like an exciting job. Pretty valuable experience. How long have you been doing this?

>> No.1126026

Mmmm well yeah I suppose your kind of position isn't exactly as "kill oriented" as mine.

I implemented algorithms in the missiles' system to optimize the kill count based on data acquired in real time in the first few weeks of the internship. We also had docs to read about which materials we should use to maximize or minimize the spread of shrapnel.

It's fucking crazy. Everyone here finds this entirely cool and they're like "meh, it pays more than working on saving the environment or towelheads LOLOLOLOL". Morons.

Wow, so you can supposedly do work similar to that of one type of engineer. And I'm sure many engineers could do the job of one type of scientist. I'm sure an EE could do some physics work, chemical engineer could do some chemistry, etc etc. This is nothing special, and neither are you.
