It's the demonstration of what happen when the economic positive-feedback concentrate more and more money in the hands of less and less reasonable people.
It doesn't matter anymore if it work, if a more simple maglev was more efficient on the long term or even if it is a scam.
Someone rich asked for it, salaryman will therefore work on it regardless.

If he paid for a space elevator we would work on it without studying other solution like space tether, orbital ring, or launch loop (those all require experience with magnetic rails).
