Not OP, but admittedly I am a 2016fag. I thought /sci/ was pretty good even back then. There were a decent amount of math, phys, chem, bio, etc. threads, and now they're mostly brought up either in the threads OP mentions or they're confined to their own generals. Then again, I was too early in my education to actually understand most of the threads so you're probably right that /sci/ has been always been a shithole.
