Why don't they make bulletproof vests etc. out of diamond if it is the hardest metal?

>> No.11189792

Because Mithril vests exists and they've already proven the capacity to protect Frodo from the strike of a mountain troll.

>> No.11189803

They use ceramic plates since it's also very hard, and easier/cheaper to manufacture, and is easier to shape into unique shapes, like hexagons, which can be layers in tiles that direct energy from an impact into a larger area
They also use composites, metals, and other compounds, almost all of which are better than diamonds lmao

Diamonds are transparent and, due to their natural pyramid-ish shape, there are only two ways you can make diamond armor (remember, it's too hard to make into different shapes)
You either have the blunt part forward in which case if you get hit you might get cut by the sharp edge, or the sharp edge points forward which shatters the crystal.
So basically the best form of diamond defense is to have the blunt part forward with some extra defense on you as to not get impaled, BUT, since it's a perfect crystal structure it will actually amplify laser gun attacks so you die

I don't think that's true because brittle materials do not make good armor. Usually armor is made out of non-brittle plastics or non-brittle metals. Perhaps you are referring to some non-brittle materials which are designed to absorb kinetic energy through catastrophic structural failure? IMO, more brittle than steel means something much different than "brittle." Do you mean that some armor is made out out of ultra-tough materials which are not brittle at all but are still more brittle than steel?
