It actually isn't that cold because you are comparing two different things. The thermal conductivity of a vacuum is extremely limited if not totally absent compared to matter conductivity (itself contingent on medium, state of matter, pressure, etc). If you were ejected into space around earth without anything on, it would not be immediately cold, even in the absence of sun at minus 250. If you were surrounded by pressurized air at that temperature, you would nearly immediately freeze to death. You will die of hypoxia before "the cold" will kill you in space.

There is almost no particles in the vacuum of space. If you are floating in space in direct sunlight, you will get toasted from unfiltered EM radiation and high speed particles from the solar wind. Put a big radiation shield in front of you and you will freeze.

Assuming you're the term 'hot' as a relativistic descriptor of temperature that you can form connotations with, where the fuck are you from to call ~38°C "not even that hot".

So, I'm studying planetary science. You've got some answers that don't actually explain things. Space is very definitely not cold. It FEELS cold because there's fewer particles which transfer heat to your skin but each particle that hits you is extremely hot.

Perhaps you've seen the atmospheric temperature graph where the Thermosphere just goes up insanely high because particles in space are extremely energetic. It's just there's fewer of them.

You see, there is not a very accurate definition or empirical evidence of this place/thing others are referring to as "space". a couple common understandings of space I've heard of is that it is "the absence of matter", which of course is not a specific thing to be discussed about. Another falls along the line of "is a place/container/manifold/dimension", something that would be more specific if there were actually proof that it were one of those things. Unfortunately these descriptions don't tell me what "space" is and one of them completely contradicts it being definable "as something".

Well a "location" is where something else exists and defined by that something else to begin with and therefore "space" is still a privation. You are referring to a particular set of differences that is contained within a reified boundary or "location" in the first place, it is still not a thing in itself. It is like referring to Antarctica as something different and discrete from earth just because its location has different properties and seemingly more distant to warm areas.
