What's the best way to prepare for medical school (4 year graduate entry btw) if you have virtually no science background? Is it a good idea to spend a few months learning anatomy and stuff or just go straight in as a blank slate? I feel like I will be at a disadvantage compared to all the other people who did degrees in science.

Why should I study anything else than medicine in a country where education is free and highly prestigious. I love STEM fields but I'm starting to doubt my decision, still in undergrad, could still make the switch, but I feel like my passion is either scientist or maybe engineer, I could see my talents as a practicing physician but I don't see myself in that environment at ALL(hospitals).
Lifestylewise it seems so much better.
Can you guys redpill me on the drawbacks of being a doctor?

I was in a similar position to you, I was a math major but did a first year subject in chemistry (not that it really helped). I wouldn't bother learning detailed anatomy, just enough that gives you a good overview of the organ systems. A similar overview in biochemistry, cell biology and immunology will also be helpful, e.g. don't bother learning all the pathways in detail, just their high-level function, concentrate on big picture stuff.
The gap between you and biomedical science students will quickly close, especially by clinical years.

>> No.11122926

If you become a scientist and want to participate in medical research, you will always be inferior to the physician-scientist, if you become an engineer and participate in biomedical engineering, you will be inferior to the physician-engineer. Just because you finish medical school doesn't mean you need to work in a hospital for the rest of your life, the pathways forward are very diverse and you will be in a privileged position to do what you want.

Drawbacks are no mystery: relatively high stress, long hours and dealing with shitty people.

If you want to do some research you need to go to the academic route which means:
1) to be brilliant among people who are on average already pretty smart
2) network a lot as early as your second-third year

I don't think that the "lifestyle" is so much better compared to most STEM careers to be honest and the stats on mental illnesses, suicidd and addictions seem to agree with me.

modern research in the medical field is horrible. You will never reach any real discoveries because you'll always have to settle for poor quality research with very vague conclusions that could mean anything just to keep your funding. Basically good research needs funding ad time but investors want good research but want no time. Ever wondered why there is research about the advantages of eating chocolate being published every other week?
Stick to being a doctor or whatever you work as, the idea of being a researcher is great but the reality of it is pure hell

So if you read those news reports about those places you can get transfusions of teenagers blood and how historically the aristocracy were into all kinds of blood drinking stuff, right.
If you look up the Berzynski institute and the research he did into the difference between cancer and noncancer patient blood differences, the guy got anticancer results by injecting cancer patients with synthetic blood ingredients he was making.

so i'm a college junior who was planning on doing premed. my first year i mad mostly a's, a couple b's, but faced some mental health struggles the next year and had a mediocre first quarter that dropped my gpa to 3.4, then had to do a hardship withdrawal the next quarter, and THEN returned to school too soon the next quarter and wound up failing all of my classes out of negligence. took a quarter off to heal and reorient myself and looking to return this winter.

have i fucked myself beyond redemption for getting into a good med school? i've ran the numbers; if i literally never make anything lower than an a again i'll graduate with about a 3.7. is it still worth trying or what? will my withdrawn quarter count negatively towards my cgpa? even if i make it 100% from here on out, will those grades and withdraws make my application too ugly for acceptance anyway?

you really can't blame them, these are their patient and they will be the ones held responsible if you do a mistake and even approving you to work independently when they personally feel you're not ready will have a lot of consequences for them
You are at a teaching hospital, and like it or not they're just doing their job and a damn good one if they keep giving you a heads up about stuff you need to do before you do them so even if a student forgets they'll remmeber now
If you're already doing a great job, you don't need to change anything. They will notice your skill and you will gain their trust and will give you a little more freedom. However never expect to have 100% independance. Modern medecine is team work. The attendings and chiefs of medecine will always look over your cases even after you finish learning. Romanon here, I had the time of my life in pediatrics yesterday. So, just to make it clear, my group was combined with the English program group because their professor had some problems and couldn't attend.

My Prof is a child diabetes and endocrinology specialist and is a fierce motherfucker, that guy is all about discipline and knowledge (Communism left a huge mark on him apparently). The thing is that they knew our Prof was a Savage and when they presented themselves, it was kind of awkward and most of them were very tense.

The first case I had, the Prof put me and a pajeet girl to check on a 2 y/o with apparently what we thought was tonsillitis (and it was). Prof came in, told us what would we order first from the lab. Before I could say anything, this pajeet girl goes "BLOOD SUGAR!" Like an autistic child. I mean, I get it he's a diabetes specialist, but...the kid is nowhere near diabetes...the Prof sighed and looked at me, I bursted out laughing and ordered the labs instead.

small quantity of air get absorbed, they dissolve in the bloodstream, bond to proteins, etc. i don't think it's impossible that if there is an injured blood vessel with presence of air you can get embolism but after a surgery usually everything is repaired
probably works like subcutaneous emphysema or surgical emphysema, i don't know the specific channels that mediate the reabsorbtion if you asked that
remember that after those surgeries you place a drenage to take out air and fluids so very little remains inside

Oh, misread your comment then

I don't think anaesthetics(hypnotics) like propofol by themselves give that much of a high, you just fall asleep too quick, and upon waking up they seem more confused rather than euphoric, but I haven't tried myself

We do have a bunch of opiates and benzos, but it's tightly controlled. Don't know how it works in America, but in my country both the physician and the nurse have to sign for each vial used, so you'd need to have at least one more person in on it if you want to take some for yourself.

Chestia asta tot de kinetoterapie ține, ți-aș recomanda să mergi la un medic în medicină fizică și de reabilitare, ăștia numai cu asta se ocupă și îți fac o schemă de tratament.

Is brain damage the cause of my erectile dysfunction?

Some background info I am 21 years old my testosterone result was 911 ng/dL, I was prescribed cialis 5mg daily the maximum dose.

I told my doctor and he said he suspects a neurological cause because I am diagnosed with memory problems and autonomic dysfunction.

I am looking into psychiatric drugs for the severe depression which is also a result of brain damage, I just started pramipexole which is being investigated as a treatment for sexual dysfunction and treatment resistant depression.

Multiple neurologists told me I have a rare neurological disease and it will never be diagnosed so I should give up.

It is standard of care in PT/OT for post-CVA rehabilitation with hemiparesis. When there is no voluntary motor control it might be the only way to get muscles to contract, and hopeful to build the bridges and connections to eventually regain some level of mental control over movement.

That said, a lot should depend on your patient. You generally want the maximum possible effort out of them. Actual active exercises of the target muscle group would be optimal since you also get blood flow to the area and assistance from nearby muscles and structures, not to mention neuromuscular connections. If we are talking a 0/5 or 1/5 muscle strength then passive range-of-motion exercises along with stimulation could be a consideration. Just keep expectations in check. This could potentially slow wasting, but as long as they have muscle groups which aren't really getting any active work, they will still most likely be in a trajectory of progressive decline of function.

Any dentists here? I have a few questions. I have some tartar, got it years ago when I was a teen and not brushing every day. How bad is it that I still have it? It hasn't expanded any more than I can tell, I brush twice and floss/mouthwash once a day. I do drink coffee though and my teeth are yellow as a result. I grind in my sleep too, to the point that my lower molars are concave from my uppers wearing them down. If I get a mouthguard and maybe switch my coffee for unsweetened black tea, should my teeth be fine? I don't have any pain or aches but I worry about them constantly. Also, is it normal for you to be able to wiggle your teeth the tiniest bit? They're pretty solid but if I grip one of my bottom front teeth I can feel it move by a microscopic amount. Is that just normal give or what?
