I think it's worth pointing out that Zimbardo was allowed to conduct unethical experiments on college students because he was presumed to be doing scientific research in the field of psychology.
I think the reality is that Zimbardo is a sadistic man. Instead of going into a scientific field, Zimbardo was recruited by psychology and psychology allowed Zimbardo to play out his sadistic fantasies in real life.
Zimbardo's problems should have been handled outside academia. He should have been taken outside of science and been given an opportunity to come to terms with his sadistic impulses.
Instead of mastering his own dark impulses, Zimbardo inflicted them on vulnerable students. As a result, many lives were destroyed.
