I was looking at the sky earlier when I got back from my girlfriend's house.

I saw Betelgeuse. It didn't explode.

It would took at least a few years for a supernova to form that.

Due to the distance between us and betelgeuse, it would be a while until we'd find out. And if we just looked up and saw it isn't there anymore, then it must have gone many years ago.

This is a good idea as well, seeing as how Betelgeuse is about 600 light years away. It wouldn't become apparent to us until the light reaches us.
