>spend 8-10 years in university
>get paid slave wage to do “research” that is probably meaningless
>spend months writing thesis maybe a dozen people will ever read
>still have to get a post-doc, still getting shit wage
>finally get a decent job in early 30s
>spend rest of your life teaching elementary calculus to unmotivated undergrads. If not, doing a job in industry or national labs an engineer could do

Why do so many people choose to go for a PhD when it is so obviously a terrible idea? And why is academia so full of bullshit?

I chose to pursue the PhD because I didn't want to go be an office worker after finishing my undergrad.

Because people are gullible sheep who go through the motions. The big players always hit a rock bottom some how early on to realize the truth. ie. Tesla gambling away his parents savings, hitting rock bottom, Newton being an abandoned orphan who had fantasies of killing his stepfather and mother, etc etc. Average PhD student is just a useless pseudointellectual who can't actually think - just repeat.

A dozen? Your optimism is heartwarming.

I find it fun. I don't really want that much money.

I did it because I got paid to do what I already would be doing with my free time if i was financially free. There is nothing better than job satisfaction and being extremely invested in your research just for the sake of curiosity. I live to do these types of experiments, not do the experiments to make money to then consume.

I bet you're an underage pos.
People go for PhDs because they like it, and having the opportunity to stay in academia for so long is a massive privilege, most people can barely afford a short undergrad course.

I wake up in the morning and the first thing I remember is that I have my goddamn doctorate in mathematics, this results in an immediate rush of endorphins and testosterone which will last for the rest of the day. I then get to work writing down the proofs to the theorems that I solved in my head last night. After that I fuck my 10/10 wife while thinking about my research. I then leave without eating breakfast since I no longer require sustenance. Next follows morning lectures gracing plebs with some invaluable insight into my mind and its firm grasp on the most important field of study in human history. The rest of the day I spend developing various mathematical structures on blackboards, the results of which will be applied to curing all cancers and building thermodynamically efficient cold fusion reactors. As the day winds down I ponder my surreal existence, I have to dig up my degree to remind myself of the reality that I do in fact have a PhD in mathematics. Finally I fall asleep holding my doctorate and 300k salary slip in my arms.

And then I do it all again.

Newton, for one, realized that even if you were racist, sexist and had multiple written accounts about wanting to beat your sister and kill your mother, if you invent Calculus most goy textbooks will mention the calculus part and not the beating women part.

well pretty much anything else is even more terrible, like getting a job in mcdonalds.

>And why is academia so full of bullshit?
I think this whole world is full of bullshit, this idea of massive production gets all over our society. Are not academics "encouraged" to publish articles, just for the sake of publishing? They do not give a fuck about the content or impact of the article they just want numbers, just like any other "evil" company, like Disney, for instance.

Or you could be a pure researcher in a country less shitty from all points of view than the US. No teaching, doing whatever you want.
