Okay, how about this. Do animals have consciousness? How do their brains work that separates them from us?

ur either an animal or unconscious

Do you believe that you are a thing.
If yes, then do you believe that you, a thing, can affect other things?
If yes, then do you believe that other things can affect you?
If yes, then do you believe that you can affect other things and other things can affect you in manners different than force, acceleration, magnetism, electromagnetism, sound, light, etc?
If yes, then you do possess something more than just the thing that you think is you!
Not only that, but if you believe that these things apply to your house pet, then indeed your pet possesses a soul as well!

>Do animals have consciousness?
Impossible to know for sure but it's likely that many of them do, with more intelligent animals having broader and higher forms of consciousness and less intelligent animals being conscious in a more restricted sense.
>How do their brains work that separates them from us?
We can't fully answer this until we understand what about our brains makes us conscious, but it probably has to do with the relative size of the cortex (much bigger in humans) and to what degree neurons can become interconnected in complex networks and networks of networks.

Basically shit's complicated and we don't know.

We're all ramification of the tree of life.
At what point does a soul begins to exist?
What does a soul taste like? Have you seen a soul? Is it cold, is it warm?
Aren't you just attributing to the word soul everything about you you don't understand? Isn't it just your insecurities talking?
Maybe a soul isn't important. Maybe a soul brings more trouble than it provides insights. Try living without a soul.

why do people keep making these threads?

I find this to be pretty interesting actually.
We know something like consciousness exists in this world.
I for one could easily believe that it is an emergent property of complexity arising in a neural network. Many people who have fully understood them would probably say the same. Think about it: What makes you really you is the hard-wiring in your brain, with some added memories. There's nothing else to speak of, there doesnt have to be something else for it to work, basically.

And think about this: There's no reason for consciousness to be just one property that can be tuned up or down in a straight line. Consciousness arises from complexity, so it is a complex sum of many different parts that is beyond "understanding". It can have many forms. Likewise, my guess is that every animals experiences a much different form of consciousness, that has next to no relation to human consciousness.

Studies have shown that insects react to different pain differently, for example.
Some have shown different kinds of grief, others just moved along and ignored it.

So there is a possibility that some animal's consciousness is even "greater", or let's say "much more vibrant", than in humans. I could easily imagine that, because it is a very good tool to survive in the wild. Being able to abstract things like us humans does not have to be a part of being conscious.

Some animals (like dogs) can't identify themselves in mirrors. Others (like elephants, great apes, and dolphins) can.

It's a neat question

The obvious answer is that you are not separate, and the appearance of separateness is just an illusion.
