the imaging project was relatively cheap. the radio telescopes were already being run/deployed and the EHT folks just rented like a couple of days on the actual apparatus. the actual telescopes are being used by many other collaborations for a lot of other more important research; the EHT memers (ahem harvard ahem) just saw an opportunity for huge publicity by applying their "imaging" expertise (N.B. imaging is a meme)

a lot of work went into making that image. it is low resolution, but not because the people who made the OP image were stupid. (PS: kate bouman's algorithm was not used in making the "final image" which OP posted). they did a lot of very serious and good work to analyze the data EHT compiled for making that image, and they even used Kate's version as an example of how NOT to make a meme image, in making their actual BH image

in any case the whole "imaging" thing is obviously oriented to popsci media. the actual scientists behind the image were more concerned with looking at histograms and graphs, not the meme image (which never took Kate's algorithm into account)

the team was probably 20 people (i.e. grad students, postdocs, and junior professors) who probably saw nothing out of it -- their PIs probably shifted some funds around and the actual researches involved probably got paid exactly what their monthly payments were on their existing contracts.

this is how science works -- the old dudes in control of the money pay for the gifted students to go do expensive experiments, but the students who do it ABSOLUTELY DO NOT EVER SEE AN EXTRA CENT

Imagine if the original effort that was made in the 70s to develop the first MRI machine resulted in a bunch of incomprehensible raw FFT measurements stored in one thousand 10 MB HDDs that you cannot possibly process at the time and you can only show a 64x64 black and white picture of something that looks either like a brain tumor or a monkey penis and that's what you end up showing to the people who financed your "world changing discovery".

The whole story just demonstrates how much scientists are out of touch with the normies and the general media circus. Did not one of them stop to think hey, the media are making a big deal out our incredibly complicated and technically mind blowing experiment, but the actual image is going to be a complete anticlimax for normies raised on images from
pop-tier sci-fi flicks? Nope, because they are technicians and scientists, not public relations experts.

They really should have shunned the media attention or diverted it away. Failing that they should have commissioned some artist to create some visually awe inspiring image captioned with "based on real scientific data". Normies dont care about the small print caption underneath scientific pictures. They rarely read them. They just want pretty pictures. If they had done that then the whole thing would have been a non issue, the normies would have gone away in admiration of those clever scientists, and the scientists themselves would have got the praise they deserved from the academic circles which actually understand this shit.
