So who's gonna watch the Falcon 9 launch cast tomorrow? I hope both stages work and it reaches orbital velocity.

Well, /k/ managed to fix it after several months of absolute shit by getting a mod to actually ban people.

/tg/ does it by just subverting every thread to be about something else if it's a troll thread. Or sometimes they just turn a troll thread into an awesome thread somehow.

The problem with /sci/ is that too many people around here act like pretentious knowitall's who shit all over every thread where someone's trying to learn something. Instead of talking about math, people spam "NO HOMEWORK THREADS" [whether or not there's even any homework involved, and even if there were, why is that even a bad thing?]

We've driven out all the interesting discussion, and now the only thing interesting that's left to talk about is religion vs science.

IIRC it has been done, and the oxygen they combine with the kerosene in most rockets is liquid, they just use loads of insulation. The major problem with hydrogen is that is has to be pressurized, leading to significant weight gain.

I may be wrong but I believe the N1 had pressurized hydrogen tanks. That may have had something to do with it blowing up every single time though.

This is basically a test of the rocket itself. It's lifting a version of their orbiter with no heat shield into orbit. If the mission is successful, the rocket will lift the load into orbit, where it will stay before eventually burning up on re-entry.

This doesn't sound exciting, but this is the first time this rocket has launched for real. If they pull it off, they will have proven that it is possible to lift their orbiter into into orbit, paving the way for future missions.

now confirmed; small fishing vessel near the launch zone. Fucking fishermen, get the fuck out of my range.

it seems the telemetry issue is caused by the leaning back of the arm now pouring fuel into the rocket; this caused one of the telemetry feeds to be way weaker then expected. it should be fixed if the rocket leaves the tower ( ie liftoff ) but I can easily imagine rules ( and common sense ) that say you shouldnt go on the hunch that it will fix itself.

From what I've heard it is a rather unpleasant experience for boaters in the range.

The choppers hover right over you (difficult to ignore a Blackhawk 20 ft above you), they drop a 5lb bag of flour on your boat, with a note telling you which direction you need to head in immediately at maximum possible speed.

Once you are outside of the range, Coast Guard will board your boat and you will spend a few hours in their company as they inspect your vessel and question all the passengers.

If the captain has been consuming alcohol (not uncommon), they will be seriously busted.

Very few people are ever intercepted twice. Anyone who goes through the wringer once learns very directly, that it isn't worthwhile making that mistake again.

this is a test launch. it has no real payload - it will burn out when it reaches its orbit, and will then slowly decay over the course of a year.
The dummy paylaod is a dragon ( their capsule ) spacecraft dummy, packed with sensors.

a quick review -
reloaded after first abort at T minus 2 seconds.
2nd time, flawless launch, max Q, MECO, stage SEP, 2nd stage merlin ignition, and SECO, achieving orbit.

HOWEVER

the roll at the end of the orbit seemed to be increasing, not sure what happened there, but it didnt really look nominal. not too much of a damper, but still. It'll be interesting.

Thanks for staying with me in the thread.

also, they might try to recover the first stage. first time anyone has done that...

heres the liftoff.

>> No.1105049

so, uh... what happened to that bee?

>> No.1105067

>>1105049

>> No.1105102

>>1105067
didn't the exhaust gas ignite most of the organic material near the launch pad? Bee's got a god chance of being dead.

>> No.1105114

>>1105102
bees can fly. grass cant. if the bee had been on fire im sure they would have called it a beefire instead of a grassfire. so dont worry, it was only grass that burned.

I almost chocked when I saw how...very...slowly....the first 10 meters where.
Anyway, talk on the insider forums is now that the roll is the only thing that was an anomaly, but that they are waiting for indipendent orbit information.
however, overall, the launch was a GREAT SUCCES

and epic. I think you can use the word here.

>> No.1105142

pictures now slowly streaming in, I expect a youtube of it soon.

first, just look at this picture
http://twitpic.com/1twaez/full

other minor issues noted;
there where a lot of sparks on first stage. it looked like some insulation got loose, possibly burned up. not a biggie.
then, the roll on 2nd stage might be due to the turbopump exhaust ( which worked as a gimbal ) getting stuck. The roll at the end wasnt intended, and it seemed to accelerate.
both issues are , of course, TINY PEANUTS compared ot the first launch of a new rocket.

recovery of the 1st stage is underway - we'll hear later about its success.
it's quite good that the 2nd stage went flawless aswell - it had NEVER BEEN TESTED in a vacuum.

>> No.1105153

I heard an announcer claim that there were no stabilizing rockets on the second stage to correct any sort of roll. I really don't know much about spacecraft so I don't know if he's talking out of his ass or what.

>> No.1105179

>>1105114
I think you're not getting what i'm saying. I don't like bees. BURN THEM ALL. all the non-pollinators anyway.

>> No.1105180

>>1105153
you can use gyroscopes and the likes. and the gimballing rocket engine can be used aswell. as can a ( working ) dragon capsule. its not a real issue.
a succes would have been a first stage launch, with 2nd stage failing - obviously we got more then that.

There is also some talk about a slight recontact between 1st and 2nd stage - they might want to use a second more or something before stage sep.

>> No.1105201

Talk of fuel slosh may have been spurred by the roll. Fuel accelerating from a standstill in the tank to a swirl down the feed lines imparts a torque to the vehicle.

>recovery of the 1st stage is underway - we'll hear later about its success.

First news is that it hit harder than expected, and there is a debris field. So much for first stage recovery on this flight.
