Why do mathematicians dedicate their time and energy to such ridiculous, useless and trifling problems as this?

You do math for the sake of math. It's usually everyone else who benefits from their work. Ages ago some Austrian mathematician spent some time working out how you could solve the inverse problem of a volume being integrated over through linear slices - i.e. how you could infer the volume and boundary from multiple slices. Turns out that's exactly what you need for 3D CT algorithms.

Also, I know this is bait.

Because math isn't about usefulness.

Also, as an aside, the developments from 1870-1930 that led to the universal computer where max-level autistic philosophy concerns - so the "what would be useful" approach is limited either way

Unlike your mother and blowjobs, mathematicians care about things beyond your cash. Money cannot buy the glorious experience of math. it's a limited resource, time, so to spend it on your wet dreams is a waste of effort.

funny, but odds are that anon imagines a society that makes him personally happy.
But one where I should suffer for doing what I enjoy.

People do shit like math for competition, proving a point, work, money, sex, to provide for their loved ones, because they have to or they want. Maybe they hated their field initially and then learned to like it or the reverse of they loved their field and got bewared of it and changed to something else.

no, just pointing out that you goals are only for you. So I don't care about them, because I have my own.
as do you, probably.
>The only thing you accomplish with this is to make it clear that you do not wish the same for me.
yes, but not in a malicious manner. I simply don't care if you suffer or dance in glee. Because I don't care about you. Obviously it's not personal, it's exactly that, non-personal.
>Makes sense I am doing mathematics then, which clearly takes no effort at all.
good to hear. I enjoy it too. What I said was in jest, don't take it seriously anon ;)
Sad that you feel this way. I am sure there's something you can do about it.
yes, It is no longer a tragedy. What did freedom really matter? how could I have know it was good if all I knew was slavery? it's irrelevant either way. really we are just being slaves to our minds and expectations, we are free and infinite when it comes to our thought.

Try to not have destructive goals. At least when possible. There is no apparent good reason for anyone to stop my goals unless they want destruction for destructions sake. I know it might sound naive or dishonest, but that's at least the kind of goals I aspire to have. And I believe you should too.
