>be me
>can't afford the prof's own shitty textbook
>beg him to slip me a pdf: no dice
>bootleg my own pdf using classmate's copy
>get an idea
>learn what I can about bookbinding and basic leatherworking in my spare time
>bind a few books
>successfully convert shitty bootleg into antique leatherbound tome
>show it off to peers for a few days
>sell it to visibly erect professor at substantial markup
>some math students started inviting me to hang out with them
I lied about one of the last two things. Does anyone else bind their textbooks? It's fun.

No. I prefer writing in mine with pen and spilling coffee on the pages.

Very cool anon
I like to write my study notes like I'm writing a small book: cover, index, header and footer of every page, diagrams; everything in libreoffice tho

>> No.11009672

I've actually been wanting to do this for a while, but was always too lazy and instead resorted to printing off my textbooks chapter by chapter in 4-fold booklets. I used a drill bit to punch holes through the middles, and stitched each booklet together with white thread.
I wanted to make my own bootleg softcover versions in iconic Springer yellow, but the whole glueing of the spine and shaving the edges flat just seemed to require to much precision, and I didn't want to go through the effort only to end up with an unshapely mess.
I could have done coil bound but that shit is ugly.

Yeah no one wants to hang with you, especially not the autists that study math. They lack the ability to want to hang.
No but you got a guide to book binding? What kind of paper should I print with?

What is your guys opinion on professors using their own textbook for a course? Seems super shitty to me, if they do it they should be mandated to provide it for free as it's an obvious conflict of interest. It also disincentivizes criticism of the content or even a proper discourse on it.

That's what the rule should be. Sometimes there just isn't another book to use.

Fine so long as it’s well written and priced fairly. A professor who is capable of writing a good textbook is a step above most of them.

>> No.11010639

As someone older than 99% of this board, physical textbooks can go fuck themselves. I will never go back to pre-ctrl F

Also the only professor edition textbooks I ever bought were cheap as fuck anyway, I always pirate everything else or simply don't buy it depending on the book ever being used. I'm a cheap bastard and not pretending I'm doing it for moral reasons but textbook companies are evil

I concur. I had a couple who were bros and gave out pdfs of their books for free. There was one who made everyone buy his book, but I refused. It was a history class so I got away with it easily. Fuck that professor, he was overrated as hell. All the history kids lined up to suck his dick and talked about his class like it was the Sermon on the Mount. I never heard him say a damn thing I didn't already know by the end of high school.

give yourself the remainder of a liberal arts education:
>become a competent autodictat
>english until youre competent enough to read everything youll need to
>math at least through calc
>physics, biology, chemistry at least 1 level past introductory
>introductory rhetoric, enough to see through bullshit fairly well
>philosophy through aristotle
from there, you should have the basics you need to explore in whuchever direction you want to. also, research your books well, down to the edition, and buy durable books or get high quality leather ones made from pdfs (most leather bounds nowadays are shit, find ones with good paper that's sewn in and real leather)

And they're all meant for Artisans willing to drop hundreds of dollars into a book, and putting hours or even days of effort into it. I want a cheap book binding, no nonsense book. It's not a hobby. I want to replicate the books to read them and to sell them because I do not have much money.
