ITT: philosophy.

I'm a computer science major. I need to take an arts course to get my degree. Should I take philosophy in lieu of some English course where we'll just wank over Shakespeare?

>> No.1099611

take logic for the love of god

>> No.1099618

>>1099611
Logic is a course in the philosophy department. Is it worth taking, or is it nothing like computer logic?

>> No.1099619

Most schools require you to take a symbolic logic class or something, so if you haven't taken that, take it now.

>> No.1099623

Why on earth would one be required to take an arts course? Your degree sucks.

>> No.1099629

>>1099618
It's a more abstract treatment of computer logic. But very similar.

>> No.1099630

Philosophy and English classes count towards Art credits at your school? That's cheating. :O

>> No.1099635

>>1099623
Structure of the degree:
all students are required to take one course from each of the three following subject areas:

1. Social sciences
2. Arts/languages
3. Science/medicine

>> No.1099637

>>1099623
All colleges do that dude.

>> No.1099640

philosophy depends entirely on the teacher, so get to know them first to see if it's interesting or not

>> No.1099656

OP again.

Should I take logic (note: I've already taken a logic course in the computer science department) or "Reasoning and Critical Thinking"?

>> No.1099664

>>1099656
I suggest you expand your horizon and take something that's interesting and different from your major.

Really, only about 10% of the shit you learn in college will actually matter at the work place.

>> No.1099669

>>1099637

I go to uni in the UK. My degree subject is Maths, so all I have to study is mathematics, or an elective if I want.

>> No.1099671

Take an English class and have some degree of culture.

I absolutely love science but I try to devote much of my leisure time to literature, music and the arts. They're really shitty college majors but I think appreciation for their pure forms is incredibly important.

If you don't take a logic class (which will probably be extremely easy), take an ethics class.

Shit is fun because you have a legitimate reason to troll stereotypical lib ed majors. There's always at least a few heavily religious people, or the "liberal" feminist, etc.

Pointing out the inconsistencies or absurdities of people's beliefs is fun when they get upset.

>> No.1099683

I've got to take an ethics class for my major

If this is how they go down, I can't wait to do some trollan

>> No.1099703

Take a Philosophy intro to logic course. It will be like an easy symbolic logic course.

This. I'd take an English course over a Philosophy course any day.

>> No.1099729

At my university, they require all CS majors to take one course that requires extensive writing.
They pretty much exclude all the good philosophy courses(logic based). Pretty much the only ones they let me take are the joke courses(woman's rights, african american studies, american films in the 1970s, etc).

>> No.1099736

Another CS major here.

I took a philosophy class last semester. Shit's real easy.

I recommend it over english, where you have to do actual work.

My friend, a male, took a women's studies course last semester and said it was real easy, but a bunch of bullshit.

aren't all women that way?

how many CS majors are here?...lol

Can any CS grads tell me if it's all about programming?

I am more interested in Database Management and Network Administration but I think a CS degree would look better than an IT degree.

Programming is like 10% of a CS degree.
The rest is theory and all that.

philosophy is algebra on a page, basically applying mathematical logic to the real world

Since you're a CS major, I suppose something like Decision theory or information analysis. That is, if those courses are part of your philosophy department, chances are they're not.

Computer Science is an extension of math. If it's pure programming you're after, you'd be better off teaching yourself or going to a trade school.

A CS major would be good for database management.

Not so much for network admin.

Philosophy is whatever philosophy wants to be.

All knowledge begins with philosophy.

>> No.1099898

Philosophy is pretty rad. I took a course called Philosophy of Science which has helped me in debates against creationists, free-energy cultists, anti-vaxers, and global warming denialists far more than any science class, since they always attack science itself when it proves them wrong.

What exactly does a DB Admin do? Or a sysadmin for that matter? I am given to understand the latter creates accounts for a given system and generally regulates it, but is this something they teach you as you learn CS?
