Come on, that's more than a little disingenuous, don't you think? Obviously you first get introduced to the concept of factorization and how variables integrate with arithmetic. You even learn basic trigonometry before you start graphing anything. American education is slow but its not like you don't learn anything new every year. Not to mention the quadratic formula is only used on equations that "aren't factorable" and you are shielded from these until grade 10 unless you're in the private system.

I was in a class accelerated by 2 years compared to the norm in my school system, and I started algebra in 7th grade with 6th grade being preparatory for algebra. Then 8th geometry and trig, 9th advanced algebra, 10th precalc, 11th single var calc, then they had to bring in a local professor to teach our class ODEs, vector calc, and linear algebra senior year. The normal advanced group did single var calc senior year, while the standard track didn't even get to calc in high school.

The vast majority of middle and high school students in this country only attend for the social aspect of school and because their parents make them do it. Teachers and other staff barely even try, and legitimately do not care if you stop showing up. Seriously, I once skipped class for over 3 months in high school just because I felt like it, and only about 4 people noticed, none of which were my teachers.
