I wasn't trying to trash Nash or anything, my point is rather that: (i) the field is quite new, so there's probably still a lot of room for novel results; and (ii) even if you fail at finding anything interesting, you can still publish it at some economics journal.

Combinatorics. Open problems are open because the normal methods don't work on them. AFAIK most good combinatorics papers actually introduce new techniques.
