To be fair, if they're planning to do civil or software engineering, chemistry is not super important but, at least around here, universities have retarded standards (I think it has something to do with accreditation) that if the major title contains the word 'engineering' you need fulfill certain requirements including taking courses in chemistry and some other things. It's idiotic because, for example, if you're studying software engineering you will actually never ever fucking use chemistry and you obviously picked the major not because you were planning to study chemistry.

Sorry, I'm getting a little defensive here because I myself haven't fulfilled my chemistry requirement for my physics major and I'm kind of procrastinating on it (maybe I'll do it this summer) because I didn't take grade 12 chemistry in high school and it has been a long time since high school for me also, and thus I legit see myself as one of the useless people during lab. I'm generally not competent in labs desu.

I've never had this experience. Worst was this one kid who kept asking for trivial clarification and sometimes making "I'm so smart" remarks, and everyone (including the professor usually) hated him.
Not saying I don't believe your story, but it's definitely not always like that. Currently doing a phd (different institute) and I've not experienced anything similar either. You just got the autistic lot I suppose.

At my uni we take a general physics course in first year and then specialized calculus-based courses in E&M, optics, classical mechanics, and relativity in the 2nd year. Apparently my uni (Canadian not American but same shit) has somewhat noteworthy physics and space engineering programs as the institution and some of the faculty have been involved in building the Canadarm or something.

Actually, I had a math major in one of my classes. I think he was an upper year student trying to fill his general science requirement for his BSc. He was overweight and wore undersized sweaters that didn't fully cover his gut. Every class, he would sit in the front row and sleep. As a result, his already undersized shirt would be halfway up his back and his asscrack was prominently visible. I didn't see him after our first exam (it was a two semester course) so I assume he dropped.

Me and a 27 year old asian guy did 100% of the lab work because our partners were a nursing student who couldn't care less about the class and a retard who was high every single time he came into lab. I wouldn't care that they didn't know anything if they weren't so disruptive. Asking for you to dictate every number instead of showing them the chart at the end, asking you to do calculations for them, complaining about the class, complaining about the professor, etc.

>> No.10946586

>>10946354
I always find this odd. It's my opinion, of course, but the calculus oriented ones are what really train you to become a physicist. Any old retard can learn and apply equations but mechanics and a few others exist to really teach you how to derive them yourself, which is why I like having it taught in the first year.
Also according to some YouTuber Americans (no idea about Canada) don't even learn calc 3 unless they minor in maths. Really?

>> No.10946627

>>10946586
We learn calculus 3 (multivariate/vector calc) and differential equations at my uni and I believe it is standard. However, for a math minor my uni has different math courses that are more proof based whereas the physics major itself only requires math 'applied' math courses or those suffixed by 'for scientists and engineers'.
