For the most part, you are right, this is basic math/compsci/optimization that anyone with calc could do. But when the box is really big and you are trying to fit a bunch of different shit inside it, or for some reason the shape of the object has to be very complicated, there can actually be some pretty deep and interesting math theory behind it. Of course, nobody with an engineering degree studies math at that level, since it's pretty much masters level math. So this is yet another case of low tier engineering knowledge being coopted by better and brighter brains.
