>He does not do regular cardio to improve his brain

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) boosts BDNF and thus generates new brain cells

Reminder that by not doing cardio your brain literally atrophies by the day

>>10834693 Good post. Currently I'm doing resistance training only with the exception of some low intensity cycling. I don't want to add any cardio because that will prevent growing muscle from the resistance training at best or lose some at worst.
Resistance training has beneficial effects on cognition. For example see https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/jgs.14542
Maybe for neurogenesis you can do other things while only doing resistance training with some exceptions of cycling? Anybody got some input on that?

Cycling before or after gym is different if you get your protein. But intermixing running or strenous aerobic exercise strongly impedes progress.

I've began doing 30-40 mins of stationary bike cardio after lifting and my muscle has not been impeded at all even on a caloric deficit and I am firmly within intermediate lifts according to symmetric strength.

I think it's a meme, I have noticeably improved work capacity and feel way better from doing cardio. Maybe if you're running marathons or something.

>> No.10838848

>>10838734 Lucky you cycling before/after lifting are an exception. Not sure if that's only the case if you get protein right after. But it's different from e.g. doing aerobic ecercise on days where you don't lift for example.
I'm sure there's a way to combine them in a good way, but it's hard, research is missing and it will probably still impede benefits of both.

>> No.10838881

Feel kinda slow, not very aware of things and less of a firm grip on my thoughts. Subtle enough you wouldn't really notice, (it can be hard to notice what state your mind is in overall really) but as soon as the blood starts flowing, I notice those effects are lifted. Like a rush of clarity/focus, getting rid of a fog I didn't even know was there.
Keep in mind, a large portion of what I'm describing could be the result of morning grogginess and I'm just shaking it off by exercising.

>> No.10838886

Probably because you arent lifting to significantly build muscle however as a body builder type fella you really do have to cap your cardio if you want gains. Many body builders and sport lifters arent even allowed to do more than walking.

The benefits of cardio are quite clear and appear to exceed that of lifting. EVEN if doing cardio somehow slightly negatively influenced muscle gain it's still very worth it. Don't be lazy.

Tons of bodybuilders do cardio because being on steroids and not doing cardio is a definite path to fucking up your heart and health. And if you're not on steroids and competing than who gives a shit about a minuscule negative influence on muscle gain compared to ALL the benefits?

here is why cycling is the best form of cardio IMO
>low impact on joints
>you can do really long workouts even as a beginner
>you get to see more places and stimulate your brain with new experiences
>you get to socialize with other riders. whereas runners are usually not the talkative type.

OK bud, lets do it. For a short period (~3 weeks) I did run on the treadmill before lifting. First time I almost died after 5 minutes at 10 km/h, on the last day I could do 15 minutes and felt great. The reason I stopped was because I felt like it was taking energy away from me, energy that I'd need later when I lift.

Perhaps I can run when I'm done with the lifting?

Apart from running what else counts as cardio?

Anything that gets your heart rate up man, my personal favorite is the stationary bikes at the gym because I can play games on my phone or shitpost on 4chan or watch youtube videos.

Do anything that makes your heart beat fast and do it for an extended period of time, since it sounds like your cardio isn't very good you shouldn't try HIIT just yet
