To be honest, I don't think it was ever "alive". Before the space race, space travel was seen as a niche endeavor that only a subset of scientists and engineers (along with a small scifi fanbase) were interested in. Post-sputnik, American interest in space was only into "beating" the Soviets, not about what space travel actually was. The American public were only concerned over American spaceflight because it seemed pathetic compared to the Soviets, not because of what American spaceflight could do at the time. Once the Soviets were "beaten", everyone (apart from the niche crowd) went back to not caring about spaceflight. To me, Apollo was a freak event in the history of spaceflight, the capabilities and rate-of-development of spaceflight before and after Apollo make much more sense if Apollo was "cut out"

Lame. I'm pretty sure they would change their minds once large amounts of scientific data come back from consistent manned missions. Robotic missions are only preferred because it's seen as the most "practical" way of doing science in space and the long development times for a small vehicle meant that the developers of such robots could take their time making the thing while soaking up as much of the budget for themselves. Being satisfied with a dinky little probe to scan some rocks every 5 or so years is one of the reasons why spaceflight has been held back.

Arguably interest in Space is coming back in a huge way right now.

Between companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, the Mars probes and rovers, and the popularity of space based video games and movies, I would argue that the general populace is still very interested in Space comparatively.

I don't think it's ever explicitly explained what God's motivation is, if I'm not mistaken the most common explanation is that because the whole thing was King Nimrod's hubristic project designed to elevate (in both a literal and metaphorical sense) man to the same level as God, the Lord decided to punish him and all of humanity.
